ParticipantI wonder what the manufacturers thinking is regarding the likely ‘annual mark-up’ for spare parts stocks for older models? It is certain the price will increase year by year on all spares parts, but by how much? 5{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}? 10{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}? 15{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}? 20{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}? or maybe 25{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d}?
I guess it depends on many differing factors like supply and demand, outside suppliers costings, re-tooling for continuing to remake, handling and storage costs etc etc. And unfortunately the up-shot of all this means that those older machines with the built-in longevity of yesteryear are heavily penalised on those rare occasions that it should break down for want of a simple part!
Take the humble Inlet Valve on a Hotpoint/ Bosch Dishwasher (Part No’s 7051836 and 051836 respectively). Very reliable but still very much in demand and the manufacturers and wholesalers still shift a fair few on a weekly if not on a daily basis I shouldn’t wonder? Now Bosch are putting them out at £52 (retail) at the moment. Hotpoint seek around £80 for the same part. And you cannot possibly believe that Connect price it a a “Recommended Retail” of a mere £104 (What???)
We are talking of a piddling little water inlet valve here that is 4 inches high, made out of plastic and a bit of copper for a coil. 🙄

And there’s me thinking the high spares pricing policy for older parts was based solely on the manufacturers desire for you to throw away the machine and buy the latest model 😉

i have long held this conclusion for manufacturers
take an average machine with a part you dont want to manufacture or have to order high quantities to make at the right price. coupled with the need to supply spare part to meet statutory legislation
you increase the price of the spare to a level where no one will buy the spare result you only have to keep 1 or 2 in stock and nobody can complain you are not supplying spares for relativly young machines
bad news for manufacturers is people who get this treatment never buy your product again they have long memories and so do their freinds

Need one of these valves for a Hotpoint 71340. Cannot see the customer paying the Hotpoint price plus labour. Can I order the 051836 direct from Bosch, Masterpart list it as POA 😥 or is there any other way I can get hold of one of these valves at anything like a sensible price.
Shame really this is the first time the thing has gone wrong in almost 20 years and is in excellent condition otherwise, the float chamber is the cleanest one I have ever seen on any used machine of this type.October 26, 2005 at 9:17 am #147508Dave_Conway

Connect show the Bosch one at just under £25 ex VAT. That’s the best I can find though now 🙁

Ya see!
Direct proof if proof were needed that Connect (Electrue) actually read these forums 😀
Sure enough the price has come down on their site since my original posting…..WELL DONE CONNECT! 🙂
Now let me see if I can find any other glaring anomalies……. 😉
