ParticipantI have been thinking of getting one of them Infra red thermometer things.
Do any of you chaps use them and if so which type.
I thought it might come in handy in the fridge repairs for giving plate temperatures etc.March 26, 2009 at 7:26 pm #281397Specialist01269

Hiya: They can be pretty useful, those made by Standard & Tenma are good and are available from http://www.cpc.co.uk at favourable prices. I think the standard 1 is on special at the minute for £25.00 + vat.

I bought a cheap Chinese one on e-bay for under a tenner incl. delivery. It works but I’m not certain of its accuracy since it disagrees with my thermocouple on my cheap meter by 2 degrees, although the disagreement is consistent. Never yet used it at work but it’s useful to point out the window and find out how cold it is outside. 😆

Not sure how relevant this type of thermometer is in our trade? 😕
Both cooling and cooking appliances are calibrated to atmospheric temperatures and not surface temperatures as a rule. Therefore the temperature of an evaporator or the side wall of an oven will differ greatly from the temperature within.

You could point it at a bottle of milk or summat.
There again I might just spend the money on booze 🙂March 29, 2009 at 3:26 pm #281401Kirk

I use them all the time and in fridges take temp of backplate top to bottom and items in the unit you can show customer an instant reading and looks good.
Cookers it is great for oven seal leaks and I test middle of oven with a metal tray in it, though for a proper test I still use a thermometer.
Wahing machine straight on glass door you can actually watch it rise.

Thought as much, more of a gimmicky thing then that actually providing exact temperature readings methinks. Pointing at a frosted evaporator plate or a wire oven shelf proves only one is cold the other hot and little more.

Infra Red temperature probes are o.k for a quick temp check in Domestic appliances but for accuracy you really do need a thermocouple probe (k-type) & a lot of multimeters even cheapies now come with this facility.
If you look at the test requirements for say a Deep fat fryer, the temperature reading is given for a probe immersed in the oil at the centre of the fryer not surface temperature of the oil as with an infra red meter, the same goes for ovens the probe should be placed as close to the centre of the oven as possible. 8) -
