KeymasterHi there,
I’ve having a problem with the thermostat on my Nardi fitted fridge freezer – it’s a very obscure model which I can only find here.
A thickish (about 8mm) metal pipe is welded on to the back of the thermostat (located in the fridge) which connects to the cooling element in the freezer compartment.
There’s a square hole in the end of the thermostat and there’s what I assume is the end of a bitmetallic strip sticking out (there are no obvious identification marks on this part but I can post a picture if this will help).
Left alone, the pump no longer comes on, regardless of the thermostat setting. However, if I pull the metal strip to one side, I can make it switch on. But once it’s cold enough for it to turn itself off, it won’t come on again.
So, it looks like the strip never gets warm enough to reset the switch, (though temp hits 12 deg C). I can force it to turn on by wedging someting behind the strip, but there’s nothing that is (a) thick enough to get it to turn on, but (b) thin enough to allow it to switch off later (so temp ends up at -5)!
Is there anything you can recommend I try? I’ve no idea where to get an exact replacement and am not sure if I’d be able to weld the “temperature pipe” on to the back of it successfully, or should I just replace it with a fridge-temperature controlled thermostat (I don’t really use the freezer so don’t care much about the temperature in it)?
If any of you guys can suggest something, I’d really appreciate it!
Thanks,

KeymasterSound like the stat. If you’ve bust off the capiliary from the back of the stat then it is most certainly goosed, that’s filled with a gas that expands and contracts, switcing the stat on or off. Break it, pierce it, cut it or bend it over on itself and it’s goosed.
Dave may be able to get one for you but we will need the model information off the rating plate to get it right.
Dave, AIS were doing some of these machines, depends on the model number I think. 😕

Hi there,
Thanks for the reply – I’ve been taking a closer look at the stat: the wire coming out the back is somewhat smaller than I originally described(!) – about 2mm and DOES get cold when the fridge is on.
However, the stat never warms up enough for the strip to move over enough to restart the condensor.
I can’t get the plate details – the whole thing is bolted into a unit, so I’m looking at replacing the stat with one that just works off the fridge temperature.
Can you advise me where I can get a good one from? (I live in East London).
Cheers,

It sounds like a normal auto-defrost thermostat to me, any numbers on the thermostat at all ?
Probably a K59 if it’s made by ranco. The capillary (or the pipe as you refer to it) is part of the thermostat anyway so there’s no need to worry about welding anything 😉
You can see a few here in the shop:

If your has got K59 on it, you can order the VT9 there which is the same thing essentially, the capillary may be a slightly different length that’s all.

Hi Dave,
There’s some kind of serial number (in ink) on the top: A13 0307 B515 000. Nothing engraved except voltage markings.
I’ve also taken a closer look at where the other end of the capiliary goes: it looks like it’s plumbed directly into the end of the cooling pipe in the freezer. Is this something that I can plug the unit you suggested into? It looks like a permanent fixture to me.

I think it’s engineer time to be honest.
Not a costly repair should it prove to be the thermostat 😀
Repairs@ and/or the directories should put you in the right direction for one.
Dave.
