KeymasterI have just taken delivery of a replacement thermostat (Part No: 5021 59 20-00/5) for my aged Zanussi Fridge Freezer.
However the numbers on the contacts on the new thermostat are different from the old!!
Old terminals are marked, 1, 2 and 3 (1 = Black lead, 2 = Brown/White lead and 3 = White lead)
On the replacment thermostat the terminals are marked, 3, 2/6, 4
Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

It depends who made the thermostat.
It should be either a Ranco or Danfoss, this should be on the thermostat itself.
If you can let me know that, I can tell which terminal does what but I won’t be able to tell you which wire goes where as the colours of the leads are irrelevent to a certain axtent.
You would need to find out which one is the main power input, which one goes the the motor (compressor) and which goes to the light switch.

Wow, that was quick!!
Thanks for your (very) speedy response Dave.
The thermostat is a Ranco.
Many thanks

OK, as it’s a Ranco:
6 = Main power in
4 = Compressor
3 = Auxillary switch (light or anything else left over)That should do it 😀

Latest info on leads, as follows:
Main power/input is Black – which is also linked to the light switch
Brown lead goes to compressor – but is also linked to a white lead.
There is another white lead on another terminal. The two white leads appear to go from the thermostat to an aluminium element (not too sure if heating or cooling!) which dips down into the fridge compartment and into the drip channel for defrosted water.
Hope this helps

Yeah, the two white leads are the defrost heater, put the spare one on terminal 3.

Thanks for this and all working as before!!
However…..the new thermostat was recommended to solve my original problem, which was (and still is)..
Freezer (upper) compartment chills to minus 37 deg celcius and Refrigerator (lower) compartment is not chilling at all!!
Any ideas/help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mike

KeymasterHi Mike,
You’re on the wrong track with a thermostat for that fault I think. 🙁
It’s far more liable to be a weak compressor, short of gas or a partial choke although there are other problems which could replicate the symptoms. 😕
Do you know the model number and age of the machine, the model number is most important in helping.

Thanks for the info. I was just working on a recommendation by changing the thermostat. Obviously will ignore him in future!!
The fridge is a Zanussi Fridge/Freezer Model E280/2T. Old – but ideal for keeping the booze in at this time of year! Could say the same about me!

Yeah, it is an old model.
To be honest, I would cut your losses and replace it as it will almost certainly be one of the faults Ken mentioned, all of them expensive or unrepairable.

Thanks for that. I have already replaced it!
But I am reluctant to throw anything away which looks so good 😆 and may, with a little bit of coaxing, work again, even if it is for garage use.
Thanks for all of your help and advice.
