ParticipantHi All, would appreciate some help please, I have fitted a new thermostat in my Tricity Bendix Fridge/Frizer. Does anyone know how I fit the phial? I can see the old one goes into the body of the unit but don’t know where and what I attacht the new one to.
Thanks in advance for any help, I won’t let this beat me! 😆

You didn’t detach the phial from the thermostat did you?

No, I connected the new one, connection by connector, when it came to the “wire” i gave it a little pull but as it didn’t feel as though it was free – felt attached to something, I thought I’d better ask about it. Would I be able to disconnect the old one and connect to the new thermostat???

No, you can’t. If you do the thermostat is trashed.
Same if you bend it too much and kink it or put a hole in it.
You just need to follow the old one and position the replacement one as it is as best you can.

Hi k
thanks for this, advice heeded! I’m getting the feeling this is not something I can get wrong – even by a little bit.
So if I poke the phial down the whole do you know where it comes out to be attached? also if I do this can I leave the old one in place rather than pulling it through the body of the unit? I knnda think they maybe cable ties holding it to other wires.
Thanks K, appreciate the advice, Novice DIY x

You usually have to strip away the housing but, that’s very model dependent.

FYI the metal ‘phial’ is a sealed tube filled with a liquid substance that expands and contracts as cold (or heat) is applied. Operating bellows within the thermostat body that in turn operates the on/off switch. So if the phial is punctured then the liquid escapes and the device rendered useless as a result.

Oh dear, I think then that I will have to give up at this point, I will have a look tonight and try and see if I can get to the back of the unit, I can see the “grill” thing at the back and if I can get this off I should have a better idea whether I can remove the backing… pardon my ignorance to what it’s called, this is my first and I think probably my last attempt at repairing white goods! thank you again mate.

That’s the condenser, it’s filled with refrigerant gas so the same rules apply. 😉
Bend it or snap a pipe and it’s night, night Sooty for the unit.

Same rules apply, that’s full of refrigerant as well. 😉
Both can be moved but, you have to be careful.

How’s about you give us the full model number (PNc no) of this TricityBendix?

Ok, no pressure here 🙂 but what would you do? I’m already resigned to the fact that I’m not going to be able to fix this problem, to be honest the unit is at least 20 years old and owes me no favours, but the stubborn mule in me won’t let it lie :)))
