A friend replaced my fridge thermostat for me. Now the fridge is constantly icing up at the inside back!

I did notice that the old thermostat was cased in plastic whereas the new one was just wire. Could this be the reason?

I have got a thermometer in the fridge and it is reaching the right temperature when the dial is at 3 or 4 so at least the food is OK!

Do you think it is just a matter of the wrong thermostat being installed or something else?

    Hi Looby
A few questions, is the fridge running continuously? Is the โ€œfrosting upโ€ all over the back panel? What temperature are you reading on your thermometer? And have you checked the door seal? It should be an airtight fit all around the door.
The thermostat is a standard type (should have K59 stamped on it), so a long as your friend fitted and wired it correctly it should be OK
If not, the correct one is available a shop@(on the the menu bar above) part no 261055

    Hiya,

The temperature is at 5 degrees and no it isn’t running continually.

The ice builds up all over the back panel. There are no droplets of water, it just freezes up.

The door seal appears to be ok.

interestingly, if it isnt running all the time, it shouldnt be freezing all the time

often, people monitor the fridge after a stats been fitted, and then notice the ice, which, incidentally has always been there, people seem blissfully unaware of it untill theres a problem

its sounds like its ok if it isnt running all the time, sounds as if the stat is switching on and of as normal

the plastic coating on the stat isnt important, its only the last 15-20mm of the stat phile that matters, and thats usually uncovered

as ever, i do find that it would be better to fit a genuine stat for that model, as they tend to be be quite inexpensive to be fair

Just keep an eye on it, as helo_75 says it seems to be running ok, change the stat. for the part no. I gave you if it is not ๐Ÿ™‚

    Re: Thermostat problem Hotpoint RL68/78

    Thanks.

The ice isn’t just a thin layer, it builds up over time to over 3 inches thick!!

It only started happening when the thermostat was changed, that’s why I was wondering if it was the wrong thermostat or something was got damaged when the thermostat was replaced.

    Re: Thermostat problem Hotpoint RL68/78

The original stat if I remember right has only two connections numbered 6 and 3, if your friend fitted a standard stat, it will have connections 3,4 and 6. If he has swopped the new stat “wire for wire ” using conections 3 and 6 you could get problems, get him to re-check WITH THE ELECTRIC UNPLUGED He should wire it Brown to 6 Black to 4 although it is not critical which way round they are.

These are basic fridges, you should not be getting these problems if the stat is the correct one and has been fitted correctly. Can you ask your friend which stat he fitted (part number) and how he fitted it please.

Unforunately I can’t contact this ‘friend’. It was a neighbour of my Mum’s and he works away a lot.

I don’t think Mum was too impressed that he said he knew what he was doing and now I’ve got all these ‘ice’ problems!!

The plot deepens as they say ๐Ÿ™‚ if you would take my advice then you should really get a competent engineer out to save the day for you, he will also do all the required safety tests, and give you a guarentee ๐Ÿ™‚

Just click below and you should be able to find a engineer.

You say it is not running all the time. It sounds as if the stat is wired incorrectly to me if it is that thick
