ModeratorI thought I would air some thoughts in the subforum about the meeting, no axe to grind just some things I noted and would like a second opinion on.
a. Whilst we seem to have a core of friends that turn up for the meetings we also seem to have new people that come once and we never see again. It crossed my mind that we don’t seem to have any formal (or informal) way of inviting them to join our groups and get to form friendships. Too many times over the last few meetings I see lone members out on their own.
b. Despite our best efforts there is still the great divide that was well illustrated by Ken in his talk about ‘the learning curve and stress’ for the small one-man-bands vs the multi engineer companies. Somehow or other we have to improve the outlook. Certainly, one most important thing is to try and get away from stabbing each other in the back for the work. I have no idea how we may achieve this but it sure seems to allow the sharks to divide us.I look forward to constructive suggestions

I’d love to post to this.
I’d love to expand on what I was talking about on Friday and explain in greater detail how what I was on about sets us back. And I’d love to to say that we were all acting in the best interests of us all, but we’re not quite there yet.
Take for example this forum. Already the subs forum posts and information is being relayed (as I know that no manufacturer has access) to at least one manufacturer. No doubt this is in a misguided attempt to curry favour for whatever reason.
Thing is, that doesn’t secure you or your work. It merely makes you more useful whilst the wind blows in that direction.
I already know that at least one, possibly two, manufacturers (or whatever) are being fed information from in here. I’ll leave the rest to your imagination.
So for now peeps I’m afraid that we’re back to PM’s and phone calls to keep out prying eyes.
How do I know this? Simple, I’ve been told things, snippets of conversation that could only have been revealed if some of the information within this forum had been read by people that it should not have been. And I’ve planted some things to trip people up. It’s very easy you know.
So, this forum should not be seen as being secure by any stretch. More secure than most, yes. More private than many, yes. But not secure.
Seems that some people, or even sharks, are worried about what we have to say…
and well they might be to be so.

Ouch. Puts a bit of a damper on what I was thinking about saying.
The indies and especially sole traders are scattered across the country and many feel that they simply can’t leave their businesses. Simple really. I make time and pay for it later…… I was working Saturday afternoon and some of Sunday morning to catch up. However – met up with some good friends again and put some faces to names on the site. That said, I’ve got friends on the site whom I may never meet, even as far away as Australia.
As for the work, maybe the new and potential developments brought up by the meeting will help all of us.
Cheers,

I am apalled that some of the issues raied in the Subscribers forum are being passed on. After all the biggest reason behind this, is to contain some issues. Sometimes we get wind of things or have suspicions that we feel is not prudent to release.
Pity this has happened as I do have something that needs to be passed on, and therefore at this stage I am going to keep it to myself. Probably just as well, otherwise we could jeopardise other peoples efforts.
Going back to Ian’s posting.
He is right that there were divides at the mmeting, but that was mainly a cultural thing. There always has been an us & them thanks to size and position. O.K. for me because I started as a sole trader.
Yes we see faces one year, and they don’t turn up next time. That is usual as well. I had missed the last 2 meetings due to work pressures, and I’m in a position where I can delegate some of my work. Then you get those that come every time, you know the usual old faces. Dasa meetings are the same, as well as Service Force meetings. Even web postings, same reliable crowd. If it wasn’t for us few, nothing would ever be acheived.
One thing is needed for the next meeting. Name badges please. I had to ask one or two who they were, and there were a few who I never found out the identity. If you do some, leave a space at the bottom of the name plate for those who want to add their log-in name. I think UKW need to progress to a check in system for the main day, then the badges can be issued. Think about it, any-one could have turned up on Friday, and we would have been none the wiser. I know we have nothing to hide, but it keeps it professional like.

I know, but TBH I’m not too bothered in some ways as there’s always some sad git that will try to score points one way or another.
Trouble is that with the limited amount of people in here and then adding the limitations of who would be able to speak to whom and who’s been online, you don’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to work out where the leak is liable to be.
No matter anyways, we’re likely to have a cull of subscribers soon anyways as the bills go out and don’t get paid. Please remember that we DO NOT send reminders on these! Don’t pay and you will have your access removed.

The unfortunate consequence of my not being able to attend the Manchester meet is that after reading all this I cannot figure what is going on? Phrases like “stabbing each other in the back” and “some sad git that will try to score points” and “we’re likely to have a cull of members” is an alarming development that’s for sure. 😯
Now as far as I am concerned there is no necessity for anyone to explain to me what is going on here, but is is a worrying development after all this time? Ian clearly was concerned at what he observed at that meeting and relayed a sense of forboding, “sharks to divide us” and all that! Very worrying. 🙁
Most businesses are on a dog eat dog footing, always have been and our trade is no better, sadly. UKW unlike other organisations within this business has at least tried to contact and unite us all into one big happy group. Strength in numbers and all that, united towards the same goal. The Subscribers was brought about by a show of hands at Feb 2004 ‘s meeting in Sibson and should by now have amassed a nucleus of like-minded individuals?
I am sorry to learn that this is not the case and I for one at least will attempt to formulate a constructive solution in whatever way I can to put the whole idea back on the rails. 😀

Off topic somewhat now.
a) As for individuals not joining in when they can, well we do the coffee breaks, the lunch, the socialising in the bar before and after the meeting. How can we persuade those who attend to get involved further?
b) The great divide as in the 1st post is closing. We do have more to do within ourselves to get Multi and one man operations more in tune. We are considering our next moves carefully, your reference to stabbing each other in the back is over the top, I think. Certainly the level of co operation we have at the moment is the best we have ever had even if some dinosaurs remain.

I would like to thank R600a for letting me win the raffel three times. I thought it only fair to win once and let someone else have a go.
I can also say this, “Every engineer should have a diddy car. They are brilliant”
Can I get UK Whitegoods sign writing for it?And

Good idea Alex. There’s another reason: some of us are viewing middle age appearing on the horizon and we don’t always remember peoples’ names from six/twelve months before. Can be embarrassing! There are people at my tennis club where I’ve been a member for 2 1/2 years whose names I can’t always remember.
What was that well-known brand of washing machine that began with H ?
