A nice old dear called me out to her Hoover Logic, circa 1989.
Complaint of no spin.
After a quick visual to check the condition of the backplate and a twirl of the drum to listen to the bearings I plugged in and set it to spin. No motor action at all so took the motor out expecting to find worn brushes.
One of the brushes was perfect and almost full length but as soon as I looked at the other one I realised the cause of the problem. The small spring that keeps the downward pressure on the carbon brush had failed, the little hook at the end had corroded away and the spring had slipped down the side of the brush.
I brought my ‘bit box’ out of the car, it is an accumulation of over 40 years of detritus, all of the ‘ keep that it might come in handy’ junk.
Lo and behold, after a few minutes rummaging around I found a spring in perfect order.
Fitted the spring and on test the machine ran as sweet as a nut.
