ParticipantWe are getting increasing numbers of “related” trade and some who are trying to enter this trade asking for trade forum access.
The training angle may be of interest from some of the guys trying to get in to this trade.
As none of these should have full access we have decided to create a new forum, sort of a “newbies” one, that can only be accessed by the trade in general and the persons we add, those persons will not have full access to the trade forums until such time we see fit to allow it.
The reason for this post, apart from the informative bit is WTF do we call it ? Suggestions please.
Dave.

Maybe “Associated Trades Forum” and “Associated UKW Trade Member” 💡

P.S Dave, what was that BSH Appliance Care Technical CD all about, would be interested 😉

ParticipantBit of a moot point this; how related to whitegoods does a trade have to be, to be relevant?
There must be a case for starting “UKBrowngoods” for instance, and we’ve already seen the Gas lads getting going on their own. Or, “UKTrades” and splitting into sections within!
“Associated Trade Forum” perhaps for the moment?
Chris.

“Associated Trades Forum” seems OK to me.
What we will have to be careful of though is not posting error codes and giving direct technical advice, which rather leads me to think “what’s the point?” as that would be the same as the public one’s to an extent.
So, more thought on this I think, how do we verify ? How much info can we give ? Who do we allow ?
Bollocks, I wish I hadn’t started this now 😆

Nemo offered technical help as he has some techy info at hand. The disk doesn’t exist anymore, I asked BSH directly, they do have a technical help line though, who were most helpful.

ParticipantWe’ve already GOT one or two in the Trade Forums who seem to be learning the job on (our) site! I suppose it depends how honest the applicant is with his info. Copy of Public Liability as some sort of verification maybe? It’ll have a company/business name on it at least.
One rather selfish point – what’s in it for us? If we get some sort of “quid pro quo” out of it, fair enough – could always do with a cheap fix to the telly!

I’m sure Ken will have a lot to say on the subject, but hopefully he is taking a well earned weekend break right now 🙂 Chris has a good point here, although IMO not necessarily PL insurance certificate, rather just simply a ‘Company Letterhead’ introduction might be the way to go and less formal 😉 Informality being Ken’s watchword and without too many constraints at this stage of UKW I guess 🙂
To be honest the information issue is no big deal after all (i.e Error Codes etc) Its almost shareware public info stuff anyway, and is only useful to those that can actually use it after all said and done 😉
As long as we clearly discriminate the public at large using the site from those that have some form of association, so much the better. The public after all ARE our bread and butter, all others should be classified as either a help, hindrance or truly one of us anyway 😆
Chris’s observation of those ‘in the trade’ using this site as a learning tool hasn’t escaped me either 😆 😆 😆
Keep smilin’

Okay, here’s the problem….
Many of the RGI’s (Registered Gas Installers) want to use the site and I’ve had several requests from related trades and I feel that’s what we should call it, simply Related Trades Forum. That way we can cover kitchen installers, RGI’s, retailers, in fact all manners of things and if some of those people listen and take note of what we tell them then we win again. 😉
As for verification, well anyone with 10 minutes and a bit of experience can knock up a letterhead in Word, but I take the point and that may well be one way to verify, fax or email to me or Dave. Likewise with PL certificate, it’s easy to spot a dummy anyway even the employed engineers you just ask them a simple question that a member of the public wouldn’t know or ask for a copy of their ID card.
Whilst P is quite correct in that some are learning on the job, we all are to some extent it’s just that some of them aren’t a tuned in as we are I guess. I don’t think that’s a reason to exclude people.
Related trade Dave is correct, we have to steer away from any technical info or supply it on an ad hoc basis to people that we think are clued up enough not to fry themselves.
Just for your interest, http://www.ukbrowngoods.co.uk is already registered…
To ME! 😀

I spotted that a while back, thinking ‘craft sod’ 😆 😆
I agree with all you say Ken “Related Trades Forum” the way to go
By the way, just another thought, “lines of communication” I never turn my mobile phone off ! and if anyone wishes to contact me 24 hours a day for whatever reason, I always ask them to “TEXT ME”.
I would like to think that we as Admin/Moderators of such an important site, should be in 24hr contact 💡 And the best way is via ‘texting on the mobile’ should something crop up that needs help/comment/instant confirmation/desision or whatever.
Now I must admit to mislaying your mobile number Ken 😳 (I only have Chris’s…from his business card he gave me) Would it not be a good idea at this stage, for us all to exchange mobile numbers AND to have the bloody things turned on ❓ ❓
Just to start to ball rolling, my number is : 07831.593222

Participant“UKB” – should have known.
Are you suggesting we might run a forum for related trades and “drop” relevant threads into it as and when, in addition to threads which evolve within the forum? Could get mighty complex. Not only that but the iniquities perpetrated by kitchen fitters ensures they’re all going straight down IMHO, and I would have a problem keeping the old beak shut!Still, progress and all.

My mobile IS on 24/7 and it often rings at ungodly hours! 😕
The number is 07967 193895 it is seldom unattended.
I will have an 0870 number for the house that transfers to my VoIP phone and one for fax as well that goes to email, so I can be gotten a hold of okay if you need me.
The UKB one was registered just to save anyone trying to transpose the idea months and months ago. For now I have no intention to do anything with it at all, but I was asked by a couple of people if I would consider doing the same thing for browngoods at the time. For the forseeable future I just can’t see me having the time to do anything with it let alone the inclination.
I know what you mean about the kitchen fitters et all P, but really that’s an education thing as it is with a lot of RGI’s as they don’t have to get the bloody thing back out, we do! I guess that if we educate them a bit better then maybe our life could get a little easier.

ParticipantRe: Trade Related Forum
Well I guess as it’s only 5 or 6 people that can see this forum…
….07768 962200
It’s on 24/7 but I can’t always answer during the day or even some evenings come to that, text message, yeah no probs 😀
As far as the forum goes, “Related Trades Forum” then. Let’s say we trial it and see how it goes. Personally I would like to support and encourage any person who is looking at getting their foot in the door in this trade, it’s badly undermanned and underskilled at the moment, we can only try to help aleviate the problem.
Suck it and see I guess 😉

ParticipantSorry chaps, I confess that the first thing I do when I get home, even before kissing the wife, is to turn the damn phone off! There’s at least 15.000 customers round Leeds with that number and I will NOT be goig out at 2am! Fastest way of getting me is through Julia’s eMail – julia.chantrell@ntlworld.com – she’s generally online. Take the point though, will see about a “private phone” on Monday. The current number is 07767 822624 during working hours.

ParticipantDear Uncle Kenneth,
Do we get a wee peek, now that you’ve done it?
I promise not to peck the kitchen fitters…Nephew Chris.
