Does highlight how we ALL should use a plug in RCD and NOT work live when working on machines, from the sounds of this it may have been a hard wired so the plug in RCD may not have been posable but the working live could have saved him.
Iv nearly got caught out on a few occasions when testing, plug in, plug out, plug back in and then about to do something and realise its still on.
Complacency is a killer guys.

Complacency is right. I still have an RCD in tool bag as first taught many years ago.
It’s not doom and gloom publishing stories like this but a necessary and frank reminder of what we work with every day.
More of it and it might just save one more life
RIP fella

Guys: How can you say he was complacent ? It does’nt say he was working on the Electrics, it does say that his hands went across Live & Neutral so could have been dead before falling forward & touching Earth with his head. In that situation an RCD would have been no use at all & it does’nt say whether there was 1 installed in the property. Talking of Plug in RCD’s, Just a thought: How often do you have yours tested to make sure they work as they should ?, they were never really intended to be thrown around in a toolkit.

It was a faulty boiler although it says no faults was found. He could be checking the heater unit and not realising it was live.
I find it odd that a plumber would tackle this kind of work? It doesn’t say if it was an immersion heater. I would call an electrician if I have a problem with my electric boiler but not a plumber.

It’s plumbers that fix boilers Twixy.

All rented properties are legally required to have electrical safety checks. The inspector would have insists having RCB installed otherwise he would not issue the certificate. One would assume that it did have RCB unless the landlord was cutting corners.

Yes mate: Having done my Trade as a sparky i’m well aware of the Rules but if you take a look you’ll find there are many properties that still pass an Electrical safety check without there being an RCD fitted.

Fuse wire thingy ? you mean the old BS Re-wireables ? don’t see what they have to do with an RCD being fitted ? A lot of properties don’t have an RCD to cover the whole property, but have RCCB’s fitted on Individual Ring mains. If the Boiler was on it’s own Hardwired circuit it would’nt be covered by an RCD, it would’nt stop the property passing a safety test.
By the way properties with Re-wireable fuses are a bit of a Grey area with Electricians, they still Blow in the event of a serious short but can hold an Overload for a long time. I prefer MCB’s they should clear a Fault a lot quicker. The other thing to look out for when relying on an RCD is that they don’t allways work as they should.January 14, 2013 at 11:32 pm #387789boselecta

More sad news as a attempted microwave repair ended in death.

More people die just travelling to work in their cars than will ever die in this trade, very rare to die actually fixing home appliances.

after doing a microwave course in december this is a stark reminder that microwaves are killers.
the problem with microwaves is the 4kv that it can kick out is very bad for the heart as it puts into an irregular beat rather than stopping it.
i would avise anyone who doesnt know the dangers of a microwave to leave them well alone ..

Could’nt agree more funky, Microwaves can be lethal to service.
I was on an Arcade forum recently & there was a supposed ex-microwave engineer on there offering people advice on how to repair they’re faulty Microwaves, some people are just unbelievable.January 15, 2013 at 2:25 pm #387793kwatt

So, so true. Probably more in week than have ever been killed in an appliance related incident. In fact, you’ve probably got a much, much higher chance of being killed driving to your next call!
It doesn’t mean that you can be complacent about safety by any stretch but, the comment does offer some perspective.
