Nothing to do with the 2 sad deaths above, but with the amount of unskilled, untrained & unqualified people pouring into this trade nowadays it surprises me there are’nt a lot more accidents or deaths.
No doubt the above statement is going to get me slated but that’s the way I see it.January 16, 2013 at 12:22 pm #387795Martin

Not in the least, besides the subject comes up for debate as regular as a new moon. Be it numpty DIYers or experienced tradesmen, accidents happen be it from sheer stupidity or freak occurrences. Blaming it on inexperience and the unskilled evens the odds toward these things happening….sh^t happens……!
I willing to bet anyone that has been in this trade any length of time to readily admits to having close calls with the 240v. In my 45 ‘odd’ years I have had a few close calls and one in which I can truly admit to being lucky to be alive….but that’s another story.:D

Maybe i’ve got the wrong end of your reply, but I did’nt blame the 2 accidents on Inexperience or Lack of Skill. But as far as I see it the point I made still stands. I.e I am surprised that we don’t see more of this with the amount of people pouring into the Trade, yes we’ve all had close shaves myself included & with a lot more than 240v.

“Pouring into the trade?” ……..it’s hardly booming times for the repair trade right now but I take your point and will not be surprised at further tragic reports. Though I think the DIY dorks that come on here in the public forums more likely to add to those statistics rather than anyone that takes even the slightest interest in this lousy trade in which to eek a living.

i think these threads are good because its a wee reminder of the dangers we face , we are all guilty of complacency especially with the stress,s of customer demands etc..
sadly we will get more people doing diy or deciding appliance repair is easy .. i suppose its the same in most industries .

Hi Martin: Sorry been away from the computer & only just got to read your answer. I was going on what i’ve seen in this locality & to be honest did’nt think we were unusual in the amount of people coming into the Trade, I know of about 12 that have done so in the last 12 months on the Domestic side alone. 2 of them are ex sparkies of which 1 of them seems to be trying to do things properly, the other 1 & most of the rest seem to be there because they’ve read a book & think it’s easy money in this trade. Of the few i’ve spoken to 1 is an ex PC tech, 1 is a car mechanic & does appliances in the evenings (To help out people without much money)he’d be helping them more & saving them money if he stuck to cars and another was a Gas fitter.
