KeymasterDave, Kevin and myself met with DAG, CDSL, ELectrolux and MFI yesterday. CDA were supposed to be there but were unable to attend sadly due to circumstances.
The meet was extremely positive, so much so there’s another one due in July to take the whole thing further so when there’s something concrete I’ll report it in the forums. Probably after the next one I think.
Intrerestingly, NESN was a no show, as well as no response whatsoever after all the bravado shown at the DASA AGM and Sibson in Feb., so when it came time to put up or shut up, they shut up.
ISDAL declined to take any part in the iniuitive at all at this time.
Merloni are showing a bit of interest, but not too much.
Whirlpool we didn’t bother to even ask.
The short of it is that this may well fly and well, it was extremely positive from all that attended with no bullshit either, which was a nice change.
We’re looking at all sorts to get new blood into the industry either fresh from school leaving or retraining from the likes of redundancy situations primarily with government backed funding. There’s a lot more than that obviously, but I did say that this would be the short version.
Hmm, do I post something positive in the forums or not on this? Do we start to promote it now or wait a bit?
Comments?

Ken,
You, Dave and Kevin would not waste all your time and effort into a scheme like this from the outset unless you felt it would work. You recognised the need, you are getting the support (from those that show at least) and there is much needed interest from all quarters in this thing getting off the ground and succeeding. Even those “no shows” will show up eventually if they felt the scheme were to get off the ground as they would not want to be left out anyway.
What is needed before you broadcast any more public information, is tangible evidence of it taking off so as not to appear as just some trumped-up UKW hypothesis.
Therefore can I suggest you refrain from holding those cards so very tightly to your chest on this scheme and consider consulting your friends and associates within this forum who for the most part are well equipt to assist you further.
Clearly you are as keen as mustard to go with this, so confide in me and others and lets see what turns up eh?

May not be a good idea to go totally public until you have a few good candidates for the post of trainers. You could perhaps put a bit into the public domain, just saying things are moving apace, and maybe thank the support you are gettting from the likes of Lux, MFI CDSL etc.. You could be a little more generous in the quantity and information you want to give out in the subscribers forum.
I had a phone call from one prospective candidate asking what was it all about, and I think that a little bit of mystery would help. However, if you can display that we are serious, and this is going to happen; that will perhaps raise the quality of the applicants. There could be some out there who are better than we realise, and we need to demonstrate that we have the package that would attract such talent.
Exciting times I suspect.
Keep the aspidistra flying.

Alex is thinking the way I am, boost those that are taking part and trying to help or do something about it, that’s fair IMO.
Flipper, very valid point, I also think that the information should be throttled in some way.
Martin, no we wouldn’t put the time into it if we thought there was no point, but it has to benefit the independents in the end. As that’s what we’re all about when push comes to shove.
But you are right on two counts, we need substance to this and I am also keen to promote it in some form or fashion. The trick is how do we get that message across without tipping the hand too much? After all, we’re getting support here from some pretty heavy hitters, I think it’s only fair that we reciprocate that sentiment.

Sorry Ken……
for now what you’ve said is ok and where you’ve said it.
I think Alex is confusing the UKW trainers with this slightly, as this is NOT the same issue.
As several from yesterdays meeting have been tasked to bring more info to the table, in August (not July), it can not go into the public domain until we have at least the next meeting.
Please recall the strategy from the meeting and the overall need to present this as a solid foundation which will be able to invite all parties to join.I think you are to early with this announcement. The cards we hold are extremely early ones, worthless if we don’t play them correctly. Think before you post, please.

KevinLooks like I’ve put 2 & 2 together & came up with 5.
It seemed locical that the 2 were related at the time. Perhaps if we in the WR knew a little more we wouldn’t speculate.
Just a thought.

Whilst I agree with the WR knowing more we have to be careful of announcing too soon. Whilst the initiative proposed at Sibson in February was excellent it has been moved to a much higher level now. This of course is exciting and the prospect of manufacturers getting involved is a massive step in the right direction.
However we have had a 3 hour meeting and agreed to put more work into info gathering ready for the next meeting in August. Please don’t get carried away with this. There’s a lot of work to do just to put in place the Aims/strategy/management and administration of the idea. An update at Sibson in September is more likely, where we will be able to actually report proper progress.
The last thing we need is for this to be in open forum or closed forum at the moment as there is little to report, yet.
As I said previously……some info is reported too soon.

Okay then, we’re officially onto Plan B then! 😆
Keep it quiet in public, beaver away in the background and report at Sibson (or wherever) in September. Subtle hints to “people” in the trade would be acceptable but without too much info being passed so they know something’s going off but not the whole story. Then as Sibson approaches we do a release in conjuction with thoses involved that we will be discussing the whole subject further at that time.
Hopefully that will encourage some of the lazy bastards to get their asses to the next meeting if only to find out what’s going off. 😉
At which point we can then hopefully have a lot more to share with them all. With a bit of luck they will want to take part then.
Kevin can you explain, roughly, where we’re at without banging up all that’s been written and done or they’ll still be reading it in June! 😆
It also may well be a good thing to get the feedback from in here a bit better before we set it all out in stone.

KeymasterRe: Training (TWR)
Where we are at….
The idea is to form a proper body, based on all or as many manufacturers/work providers/insurance companies/ other relevant bodies as we can muster, along with us, UKW.
In order to attract others to the idea it was decided on Monday by D&G, Electrolux, MFI, CDSL and UKW that we needed to build a foundation to include….
1) Aims of the initiative
2) Strategy of the initiative
3) Information on training and qualifications
4) Training centres
5) EU funding
6) UK government funding
7) Relocation/redundancy funding.Several tasks have been allocated to certain individuals and work has already commenced on those tasks.
UKW appreciate that our partners can open doors for us very easily, therefore we don’t want this blowing into the public domain just yet. If we consider our partners and work with them we have a great opportunity here.
As an example D&G have already unlocked the Amdea office ( in 1 day) and hopefully a meeting will follow. Some of you may think that Dasa is already such a body and that this should be done by them. Our position is this, Dasa will be invited to join this when appropriate, we feel this is something that the past director of Dasa probably “stitched up”, so much so that Dasa can never now do this even though they hold information that would aid this initiative.
Our next meeting is in August where we will regroup and take stock of all info gathered. Only the initial companies will attend this next meeting as we feel its important for continuity of purpose that those attending are all at the same level.
Its envisaged that we will formulate a plan of action based on our research on how to proceed.
Any questions???? please ask.Kevin
