ParticipantBeen to look at a Tricity Bendix AW1053 washing machine, customer complained of it jumping on spin. When i looked at it had jumped out of top spring, no big load in machine. Repaired suspension problem. Put on spin & flash from motor armature, suspected worn brushes so took off motor, cleaned armature, brushes OK, no serious damage visible on armature. Motor does not now go at all, no visible damage to timer either. Machine is in pensioners house & hasn’t got much use, approx 4 years old, used once a week. SOLE type motor by the way.

Motor and Timer are surely required to fix this baby?

Thanks Martin, do they short over the carbon dust or something, i checked price of motor £75 & Timer £85 + v.a.t & delivery + labour makes it uneconomical.

Was there any sign of water on the motor? they can leak from drum half seal down on to the motor. Do yourself a favour and right it off as N.E to Repair

I take it the tacho is ok? a sudden high speed burst from the motor often causes motor arcing.

Motor reverse at spin speed (even if it’s meant to be washing) will almost certainly knock out the triac.

Just to reiterate, the machine obviously jumped during spin for customer as it had jumped outta one of the top springs, i tried it on spin looking at motor with back off & it flashed at motor armature. I checked brushes & tacho, tacho was intact (i’ve had problems with them coming off armature before), cleaned armature & carbon dust of frame, cables brush holders etc, plugged in motor & tried again. No go, machine pumps ok & does everything but no motor action. Pity really as its in an old ladies house & i would have rather fixed it if at all possible, but alas i advised her that it needed motor & timer so uneconomical to repair 😥
