ParticipantConsidering all the remarks lately about engineers not using test equipment, or not using it correctly, or even the replies that state that they don’t know how to use some types…
Do you think we should put up some sort of individual tutorials on using different types of test equipment, showing exactly how to use it correctly?… Similar to Martins past attempts, but a little bit more user friendly.
- It would be a benefit to WTA members and would encourage them change any bad practices they currently employ.
It could possibly encourage more engineers to join the WTA.
Published within the WTA Forum, it would be made available only to those that joined the WTA.
If it did leak out into the general public it is not going to harm the profession as it doesn’t teach how to repair anything. (or you could use an item to show-test that everyone knows how to repair anyway.)
Plastered with WTA watermarks it would be unlikely to be copied.
I could go on.
It is just a thought which came about when I decided to buy a new piece of test equipment (secondhand with no manual) and didn’t know how to use it.. I had to go looking and didn’t find it easy to gather any tutorials.

Only legal implications would be to obtain permission from any copyright holders if you are to use copies of handbooks etc.
Think of it a bit like a Haynes manual .

It’s a bit worrying if we have to teach WTA members how to use a multimeter or insulation tester…

I hate to say this, but there’s loads of them out there that haven’t a bl00dy clue.
Not particular to WTA members or any other, including Gas Safe et all.
You’d hope they’d have a clue or, remember but often don’t.

Baz.. In the manner that you are thinking…
Think of setups that have a few guys and want to employ another that needs a little training, sort of like an apprentice..
These sorts of guides can alleviate the necessity for the constant eye, and they can allow the trainee to do a little practicing.Having said that, as Ken said “there’s loads of them out there that haven’t a bl00dy clue”… With some of those that I am aware of, I think I can safely say that it is the technical descriptions during teaching that has fouled them.. We could do it differently as we are not a teaching them for a qualification; keep it simple and they will pick it up.
Well, this is the thought behind what I was saying anyway, By giving them the option to train themselves … hopefully they will rectify their ways.
There is also the fact that it will shine a good light on us.
