Participantjust canvassing opinions really. and tbh its really bugging me at 7am!
Right now I seem to be getting a lot of requests for “universal” thermostats for refrigeration, now i am no fridge expert, neither are the guys i work with, but imo a uni-stat is ok for generic carcasses like lec frigidaire, amica etc where they were all built in china, but when u get a manfactuerer specific appliance like a vewstfrost or zanussi am i right in thinking you need the right spec stat with the right length/sensitivity sensor or it wont ever work. am i right in this school of thought, or wrong, it bothers me because the other day i had a customer swear blind the stat-spec was insignificant because as long as it was suitable for a u/c auto-defrost larder any auto defrost uni-stat would work! i checked on a well known trade-only supplier site and it listed an elux specific stat, and no uni-stat as an alternative, implying the stat for his model was specifically designed for that carcass. really all i wanna know is am i wrong in refusing to supply a uni-stat to him because i didnt think it would be suitable? in these tough trading times its hard to turn down business but i also recognise your reputation is tarnished by appearing to “take advantage” of the desperate/unwealthy by selling them anything!

Most of the commonly used ones are HERE
They will work in a great number of fridges and freezers but, not all. For some you must get the correct stat or risk a bodged job and incorrect temperatures. Which is all well and good as it may well still chill but you may end up with food poisoning which, trust me, isn’t nice. 😉
The basic and general rule of thumb is that if it is a standard fridge, fridge freezer or freezer then most of the time one of these will work although some advice may be needed in phial siting etc.
However, there are a number that these will not work on and you have to be careful to watch the cut in/cut out temperatures and the constant cut in or defrost termination.
Get it wrong and it won’t cool properly or you get tomatoes like cannonballs. 😉
