I have had a brand new gas cooker installed today, upon using it, we have a terrible smell, as if it was pumping out fumes. Wife has complained about headaches (nothing new there then, lol), but I think I’m right in thinking the dangerous carbon monoxide is odorless.

Is this normal for a new gas cooker to give off bad smells?

Yes carbon monoxide is odourless and very, very dangerous as well. But the symptoms described sound very much in line with CO fumes being present as well so best advice is to get it checked. It could be something else in there that’s burning of course, but it should be almost no different from the fumes given off a new electric IME.

You can get one of those little detectors in B&Q or Homebase, places like that, but I’ve no idea how good or bad they are.

Installed a new electric oven in our place a couple of years ago. Rosieres one with about 100 different elements in it.
Every time I used it for about two weeks it used to stink the house out and gave me sore throat and headaches.
Maybe the insulation or enamelling smelling.
