This morning i was supplied with a second hand part for an under warranty repair by a company that we sub contract work from, obviously i informed the supplier immediatelly thinking it was a mistake, but i was told that it was “common practice” to use parts that could be used again.. i requested a new part, and said that we as a company would not repair our customers machines under warranty using shoddy parts!
Has anyone else come across this?

Obviously at this stage i don’t want to name the firm!

This is quite an interesting question actually. In law, I have no idea where you’d stand on it but, as an agent, if we are asked to fit a “robbed” or second hand spare we will.

    But… 😉

If it fails on installation I will close the call and invoice the job back. It ain’t my fault that the thing failed and I didn’t ask for a spare that didn’t work, I asked for a working one.

Where the customer stand I am really not sure. I recall this coming up one I’m sure with Candy where they had no stock of something and sent a spare robbed from a return. The customer refused the repair on the grounds that ahe had paid for a new appliance and she expected new replacement spares to be fitted. IIRC it was exchanged but there’s a niggle that tells me that the manufacturer didn’t have to do that, it was just political to do so at the time.

Most warranties state that it is at the manufacturer’s discretion to repair or replace the product, it does not state how that should be carried out and I have heard tell of exchanged machines being re-works and the likes by some people.

This wouldn’t be a cooker hood and the part in question is the motor/fan/pcb assembly would it Seamy ?

The machine was a washing machine, tub was supplied to me with rusted & busted bearings still in housing, with new bearings to replace them, the old bearings were really badly broken in housing.. my gripe was that i could not (with hand on heart) stand over the repair, the housing usually will leak again if there is wear on it!

Re: Using S’H parts in U/G machines?

I always had a problem with “new” refurbished Hotpoint motors with a label inside the box saying, product refurbished. Never managed to convince a customer that I still had to pay the “new” price for it and therefore the price for the “refurbished” equaled the new price.

However would kick up stink if a second hand tub with a bearing kit turned up for us to do. I think you should ask the company invovled for full explanation b4 you expose them on this site.

I’m not really going to expose the company on here, i’ve told the company that i as an engineer, i won’t fit second hand parts in a new appliance for one of my customers, they have agreed to send me on a new part after i caused a stink, but the question is, is it common practice to do a repair on an under warranty appliance using used parts? I’ve not come across it before & to be honest i don’t even use second hand parts in out of warranty repairs either.

Yeah it’s pretty common these days with some companies more than others. We get a few in from the likes of IDEA cooker hoods and I recently had a blown module (clearly fried) from Brandt. 🙁

Ah, but the label inside didn’t say refurbished, it said ” Recycled ” with a little recycling logo underneath, so much more PC…. 😛 🙁
