Please help. I have a DC01 vacuum (yes I know how old it is -please don’t judge) which I love. I’ve kept it going replacing most of it it’s parts since I bought it new too many years ago. Yesterday it stopped working, it didn’t like the paint dust I was hoovering.. v v sad. It was hot & did smell bad, but didn’t cut out. I turned it off to change the filters, but now it won’t turn on again. Turning on/off switch on and off, the most it did was a sort of cough- the motor doesn’t get going. Now it won’t even do that. I wondered if you think this sounds like a blown motor, a broken on off switch or a broken cord. (I replaced the switch about a year ago, but not with a new one). I’d like to fix it, Unless it’s the motor.

cord is always the first thing to check as they tend to break as they enter the machine

quick buzz through with a multi meter will easily check cord and switch

Thanks. Thought it might be the cord, but it doesn’t look like it is. Could it be the motor burnt out if it does absolutely nothing?

    yes
if brushes have failed. or jammed and not touching armature or there is a broken wire in the motor then it will just appear dead

if there is live and neutral getting to the wires going down to the motor then its is probably a motor fault

Oh dear. I feared as much! Hoped it was a minor electrical issue. ☹️☹️☹️ I’m not sure it’s worth putting a new or even a reconditioned motor in a 25 year old Dyson. It’s just so simple to fix usually & much more powerful than the new ones I’ve seen. Do you think it’s worth keeping it going or do you rate the new ones. Are there any you’d recommend?

    the dc01 was good
then came dc04 and 7 both came in clutch and non clutch version. clutch allowed the roller to stop when upright or on hard floors. draw back of clutch was if belts failed it was a monster of a job. even the non clutch version are not easy to fit belt

new dysons are not my favourite at all. seem way too complex and flimsy

if you want a bullet proof cleaner then buy a sebo x7 yes its bagged but you can get all the bits to keep it going for years. Belts seldom fail in fact have known them last 8 to 10 years

You can pick up DC01 motors for under £20 there were two sorts the Ametek and the YDK just make sure you get the right one. As Dave said the 01 were good in fact the best model Dyson ever produced IMO, much better than the rubbish they are currently producing.

Sebo are still the best by far 😉

Quick update. I got my DC01 fixed this morning . Although it would have given me huge satisfaction to do it myself, impatience got the better of me and I took it to my local friendly, reliable repair shop. They charged a very reasonable price to fit a (reconditioned motor) and a new belt (the spare one it came with when new never got used so not bad) same day! I agree the new Dysons aren’t nearly as robust as this one (though much lighter to lug upstairs). Anyway v happy even if it just buys my Antarctica Dyson a little more time. The fella in the shop said the EU 900watt rules meant I’d never get a new one as good as this. Ive read mixed things about this so not sure if it’s 100{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} true, although the others I’ve used seem to have much weaker suction by comparison. Agree Sebo sound the best. Shark had very good 5* user reviews. Anyway my DC01 lives to fight another day. Thanks for all your help & advice- really helpful as usual!

shark are good but if you need any part forget it
had a woman the other day where the dog had chewed the cable. she now has a 1 metre cable as you cant replace it. comes complete with the motor unit at £80
