Vat due this month? fat chance of submitting your return!

Due to a scheduled upgrade you will be unable to access our online service between 21:00 on Tuesday 30 August and 00:59 on Wednesday 31 August. If you use commercial software you will be unable to submit your returns at this time. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

fancy doing a “scheduled upgrade” just at the time everyone is submitting their vat returns!
Yes, i know we have an extra 7 days to submit and pay on line but old habits die hard and I have scheduled tonight to complete it and get it out of the way and I am already on a late payment warning due to the fact that no faster payments system is available for vat and my payment arrived a day late few months back due to inefficient banking sytstems!

I use the government gateway. I can submit in the middle of the month following the quarter end, and they automatically take a direct debit the following month on the 10th.

I assume you don’t use the same facility.

The quote above IS the government gateway Alex! (is there any other way to submit vat?) I too could submit in the middle of the month but set aside last night to do so instead. Some of us are not sitting in offices all day Alex! 😆 We our out with the tool boxes.
The point of my post was: why now to upgrade? No doubt most leave it to the last minute and if they scheduled the upgrade in the middle of the month when nothing is approaching deadlines then it would not be such a problem.

Right, I get your point re the period and being unable to make the payment. I assumed you were paying through the link on the HMC&R website, not via the Gateway service.

I always pay mine at least 2 weeks in advance, knowing the money will not leave my account until second week of the following month.

In which case how stupid to pick the busiest time of the month to insert a delay tactic.

Need to get out my office seat now and shuffle off to the loo.

well obviously the vat man reads UKW and has finished their upgrade 12 hours early. Vat return duly submitted.
