The cylinder head went on my Astra 1.7TD @ 65,000 miles. Finally @ 98,000 miles the engine blew up totally and I’m having to fork out £2,100 to have a new engine (factory recon) fitted 😥

Was that the vauxhall or the Isuzu engine? I drive a 96 corsa van with Isuzu engine with 300K on clock(looked after). GearBox died, went to scrappy 55 quid for another.

yup mines a vauxhall engine 🙁 the car has only done 35000 miles so far i brought it with slight accident damage witch was headlight bumper and a wing. friends of mine at an accident center repaired it. and first few months car had an oil leak from the end crank seal behind the fly wheel. had that fixed now its leaking oil from the sump. and a front brake rattles when driving. but this started after getting car back from garage to have end crank seal changed. 😥

I had a Mk2 Astra I.6 diesel which went well when it did run but that developed a warped head at one point. I took the head to the local engine recon. place where they told me they were doing these engines all the time for the minicabs, which were mostly Cavaliers at the time. They said it was a petrol engine that GM had bodged into a diesel version.

Errm, to see the light indeed.
We have an Astra 1.7TDI van which died. It was very sluggish with and without weight in the back. Last week one of our engineers went to a call in Harwich, the van started and stalled, started and stalled untill it completely gave up the ghost. Calledout the AA who said it was poss a fuel problem, fuel pump or electrics. The van was towed back to a vauhall franchise near where we are based and looked at the van the very next day. The report went something like this:
We will have to put the van on diagnostics to find out what is wrong with it.
There was nothing showing on diagnostics so we will have to complete and electrical test and visual inspection to the wiring loome. This will cost you £150 + VAT.
The next phone call was, wait for it “everything is ok with the van but it will need a new ECU as this was the cause of all your trouble at a cost of £586.95 + VAT, + £150 + VAT + fitting charge. All in all, £925.64 later, the van was back on the road after three days. Three days cost me a further £149.72 hire cost for another van.
THIS VAN WILL BE GOING AT THE END OF THIS YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like i’ve got off lightly, Martin.
The van will still go at the end of the year.
“Anyone want spare parts for a 2000 vauhall Astra Van 1.7TDI. There going cheap, first to see will buy, no tyre kickers please”
It has been well looked after by 5 different engineers and has done 130k.

    Ha, ha, ha
(at the end of the year, I would probably have to pay the scrap people to take the van off my hands. I bet if the van belonged to a particular engineer, he/she would look after it)

Isn’t that the one that got stuffed in February, APG? It’ll be beautifully reconditioned by the end of the year!

I have found this thread very interesting as I was thinking of changing from escorts to a Vauxhall Astra later this year Is it just the diesals or do the petrol versions suffer the same engine problems?
