ParticipantWhat is your vehicle and what do you like about it ?
I currently have a large vauxhall movano van as it was ideal for picking up stock when I had the shop, but i no longer have a shop so I am thinking of downsizing, as i do alot of repairs now and only the odd delivery now and again.
It would be good to hear what you all drive, and recommendations welcome ?

I’ve always used an estate with a magnetic sign slapped on the side.
Have a decent trailer if I have to move anything bulky, don’t really like the boomy noise and restricted visibility of a van to be honest, and don’t want to run 2 vehicles.Current ride is a 58 plate Focus 1.6 TDCI Zetec I bought at 2 years old.
Still on original turbo and DPF at 115k even though these engines apparently eat them if media reports are to be believed.
It gets fresh synthetic oil and a filter once a year and never needs topped up between changes.Air con, power windows and a decent radio is all I need to keep me happy.
Excellent ride and handling and 50mpg without trying are definite bonuses though. I’ll probably run it into the ground as it does all I need it to really and any trade in value is rapidly fading 😯Eddie

Citreon nemo. Small reliable and plenty of room for a good size van stock, not too good if you’re transporting machines around though

I don’t uplift machines at any time but I did once go to Luton and back before 1.00PM in this car to bring back an ISE 10 washing machine and an ISE dryer for my daughter, thanks again Bryan (r600a) 8)

Food for thought….. The wife has a vauxhall zafira, and only really uses it for school runs. So I’m starting to think it may be cost effective to just use that with magnetic signs on instead of purchasing another van

I have a Transit Sport van and had it from new in 2007.
It is fast and like a car to drive and returns 35 mpg.
It has heated leather seats, Air Con, Cruise Control, Electric Windows, Electric Mirrors,
Heated Windscreen and Mirrors, ABS Brakes, ESP ( Electronic Stabilty Program )
Traction Control, Anti stall, 6 CD Player .Wide Alloy Wheels with Low Profile Tyres, Body kit and much more.If I was replacing it I would buy the new Transit, you can also get the new Transit with a crew cab if you require 6 Seats and not so much room for carrying spares.
Or I would think of getting a MITSIBISHI outlander PHEV. An electric hybrid with plenty of room. And at the moment you can still get the government discount of £5000 pounds.
You can get a car or a COMERCIAL version, but I would go for the car with rear tinted windows.

I said goodbye to my van two months ago and got this estate car.
Dacia Logan MCV Laureate.
I had all the bolt on extras except leather upholstery and still got change from £12k.
Only marginally less load space than the Volvo.
3 years 60k warranty.
60/70 mpg and no road tax.It is actually a Renault in a cheap frock but better than a van.

I currently drive a Citroen Belringo enterprise van. PDC, sat nav and aircon, brand new about £8500 plus vat (i’m Vat registered so makes no difference to me) and gives 48 MPG foot to the floor most of the time. I’ve had about 4 now, change every 3 years and, i’m touching wood as I type this, never had a major fault. I did have a Citroen Nemo a few years ago and that was great as well, good MPG just got a little small in the end, but I swear by Citroen for their vans.

Thinking of ditching the van & car and getting a Volvo estate or similar.
Just a thought, how do get on with tax?
Is the Volvo estate classed as commercial, and can you set expenses (fuel Tax etc) against your tax bill as you can with a van ?
Or have you got a very clever accountant !!

As far as I was told by my accountant when I had an estate car for business, it wasn’t eligible for tax. It cannot be classed as a commercial vehicle. It can’t have back side windows, even though mine had been blacked out and covered in graphics.
Don’t hold me to it, it was just what I was told about 5 years ago, things may have changed. Hence why I now have gone back to a van and save a bit off my tax bill.September 22, 2015 at 2:53 pm #427679admin

Hi
Nope a car is a car not a commercial vehicle. You won’t be able to offset the costs fully.
