ParticipantIn our house we have an old (must be about 25 years, older than me at least) Hotpoint 9534 that has served us very well.
In this last month, it’s started to damage clothes in a random and odd fashion: it’s started to create small holes in some of our clothes. They don’t appear to be from a rip or tear, but instead some kind of dissolving or piercing action:

We’ve also had a strange incident when washing some socks: we put in a dozen socks, and it’s somehow managed to melt the end of one with some vicious friction. It’s now half sock, half solid black brick!
Does anybody have any insight into what’s happening here?
Is it simply time we got ourselves a brand new machine?
Thanks for your patience,

The sock will have been jammed between the inner and outer drum during a spin cycle. Can be caused by overloading but may also be due to failed bearings or snapped drum support allowing the inner drum to ‘flop’ around.
If there are any foreign bodies such as bra wires inside the outer drum they can make random holes in the clothes.
When you spin the drum by hand or run it on spin without clothes is it very noisy?

the outer tub front panel used to bow out and cause too bigger space between the inner drum and door seal, the newer version had a stainless trim to support it, the older inner drums where the paddles were moulded had spot welds that used to fail and a gap would start to appear at the bottom of each paddle at the front, the spot welds are only visible if the front of the drum is removed.
But to be honest…the age of the machine dont waste too much time and money!February 7, 2008 at 8:19 pm #242499MisterC

Hmm… I wouldn’t say it was noisy. It feels very stiff when I move it by hand, but it doesn’t make any loud noises and it doesn’t sound as if anything is loose or scraping.

Drum should turn freely with little resistance………

if its stiff to turn, chances are there is still half the sock in there jamming the drum

*raises eyebrow*
You know, that wouldn’t suprise me at all. I’m going to get rid of this thing.
Thanks for the advice, folks. 🙂
