ParticipantI have a Hotpoint supermatic 9040 twin tub, it’s not my only machine, I have a sensible german automatic too, but i find it very useful for certain jobs. Unfortunately it has stopped reaching proper speed on spin and the fast spin was a big reason for giving it house room.
Anyone give me the likely reasons? Belt, brushes, clutch shoes, bearings? It is sounding a bit noisy and a bit grindy when slowing to a halt. Also any suggestions for “mature” washing machine repair experts who may be able to fix it in Central Scotland.
Grateful for any advice (please don’t tell me to scrap it though!).

The top ‘bearing’ on the spin can shaft will be in need of a good clean up and lube with high speed grease. The clutch shoes also will need replacing. Sadly parts are obsolete and virtually impossible to obtain these days. But never say never if you look hard enough.

I will have to hunt around, I was a bit worried it would be the clutch shoes as they don’t seem to crop up in spare part shops as much as belts etc. Oh well…

Also the brake release is a potential cause, operated by the lid switch lever and Bowden cable. All of the above can cause spin problems…… Good luck!

I wish I was more experienced in mechanical things but I would struggle to know what was what if I opened it up, I may have to phone round all the local repairers and find out if any still employ anyone familiar with twin tub workings but at least with your info I will sound more knowledgable. clutch shoes seem to be available for around £20 online.

At a guess I’d say the drum shaft needs a good clean and lubrication

I’m sure you’ll find someone to have a look. Easy machines to repair if you can get parts but as Martin said a lot are obsolete
