Apart from the tip the only real cure is the later, modified drum. It has a rounded edge at the back.

An extra washer on the spindle between drum and back panel usually helps.

Its not foolproof, I did a drum shaft repair on one yesterday and fitted an extra washer, three in total and the drum still caught on back if you touched the front of the cabinet. 😥

Jim this caught my attention because I was led to believe spacing it out with metal washers would end up cutting into the shaft and shortening the life of it unless the washers were nylon? Just wondered if this was genuinely possible?

Was the L-bracket over the heater casing there to stop the rear panel flexing for the precise reason it had the old drum? its just i note the newer dryers with the new drums dont have them

The metal washers will not cut into the shaft, how could they? The only reason the shaft fails is because they did away with the jockey pulleys and substituted the ultra tight stretchy belt which pulls the drum shaft down into the bearing.
Even the teardrop bearings wear away in no time at all.
The 1703080 seal & shaft kit actually inlcudes a metal washer.
A good old Creda design ruined by the bean counters. 👿

I always fit new front bearings on these that seems to stop it scraping? 😉
