Participanthad a recent problem where our old Indesit Omega 1100 (WN1196WG) washing machine drum does not turn at all.
On rotating the drum with power off, I also noticed a clicking noise from the motor area.
***
I searched ukwhitegoods and found forum posts on other drum problems ..
( http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/modules.p … esit+motor ).
***
along with your motor brush article.
I followed the article, and found that the commutator had become uneven, and had started scuffing the brushes. (hence the clicking noise).
***
whilst I was unable to fix this, it did help me identify the problem and reach a decision on whether to repair or replace the machine.
***
So this post is basically to thank all you guys out there who run this site and empower customers to help themselves where they can.
A truly noble gesture gents.
a big thanks from me (and probably everyone else!)February 14, 2009 at 3:21 pm #277357A1TEC

I have the same problem, and am trying to make the same decision- repair or replace?
I’ve a Hotpoint WMA37. The drive belt came off yesterday, the machine having been making a gawd awful noise just before. With a lot of huffing and puffing, skinned knuckles and a tyre-iron, I managed to lever it back on, but the belt came straight back off when tested, and whatever state the bearings were in before that they’re shot now! I can barely turn the drum at all… bearing kits are £30-ish, plus someone to fit them (I’m not going near that drive belt again!), I figure best case I’m half way to the cost of a cheap new machine… how likely is it to be just bearings, and am I likely to have done more damage than that in-expertly forcing the drive belt back on?
Thanks in advance!

If the belt has run-off, the front bearing has collapsed causing the pulley to no longer run parallel with the motor pulley.
That being the case, you will need the bearing set and a drum support and a huge amount of patience. And a big hammer and a steel bar. You’ll probably need a set of screws for the drum support as well – they are just about impossible to remove.
The belt will be fine…….
As a repairer, I’d be billing you for at least 2 hours work, plus the parts, so £160-£180 would be a likely bill up here in Yorkshire. If you’re daahn sarf, it’ll probably be more.

Excellent, well no, bummer, but many thanks Penguin45 for the excellent advice – sounds like a down-grade machine is the answer for me.
Thanks again, and to ditto the first post in this thread, advice like this is really valuable to us Joe Publics. If the rest of the machine is worth anything to a local repairer, please go ahead and post in the trade forums as they’re welcome to it. Motor etc. is fine. We are indeed daahn sarf, East London just off the M11, postcode is E11 2HA.

Be very careful if you go the “cheap” route – you absolutely will get what you are prepared to pay for. Buy cheap, buy twice was one of my Gran’s little mottos (She had lots….). A read through the articles in THIS SECTION and THE GREAT WASHING MACHINE SWINDLE is both revealing, informative and rather scary.
