What is it that you actually need to know for so I can try to help?
There are several standards and these can vary from state to state in the EU but the overriding ones are the CE Mark and BSI in the UK to the best of my knowledge from a safety standpoint.

Thank you both for your replies – very helpful.
We’re having problems with our washing machine which we firmly believe to be the responsibility of the retailer/installer. Got a very interesting call from their customer service dept ‘offering’ to (rather than replace the machine) switch it from a hot fill to a cold fill!!!!!! Our argument is that this would totoally null and void any ‘standards’ etc etc…
Any thoughts…?
Thanks again!

KeymasterHi,
In order to understand where you’re going with this…
What machine is it?
What is the actual problem with the machine?
What standard are you thinking that is breached?

It’s an integrated machine – fairly cheap and cheerful – no idea of the make but the model number is APN8542. We don’t have sufficient pressure for the machine to work on a 60 degree wash or hotter but paid for the full installation from the retailer – therefore we believe that the installer should’ve tested the pressure first etc…. MAchine also squeals on spin! THINK we’re finally getting somewhere with retailer, possibly getting a new machine – cold fill this time! BUT, we got a call today after the third engineer visit suggesting that they switch to cold only (but the engineer said they might do this and that whilst it was straightforward to do, really was against BEAB regs..?

Okay, now I can answer.
It’s an APM8542 sold under the Hygena or Diplomat brand by MFI and Howdens Joinery. 😉
Switching to cold fill only is not a breach of any standard at all, in fact it’s preferable for most installations. Hot pressure, especially when gravity fed from a tank, is desperately poor in many homes sometimes sufficient pressure isn’t and, can’t be, available to even open the valve effectively. So, no, that doesn’t breach any rules and most certainly not BEAB or any other safety standard.
A 60C wash should still work perfectly adequately or at least, as well as it would in any event as it doesn’t take hot on that program from memory.
If it is a low cold pressure you have as well changing the machine will make not a jot of difference, the new one will do exactly the same.

Thank you for the advice Inspector Clouseau…!!
Our cold pressure is very good – only the hot that’s rubbish. So rubbish that the machine just buzzes on a 60.
Appreciate your help, thanks..!

KeymasterYeah, if the hot pressure isn’t good then the answer is to change it to cold fill only and that will cure the problem.

listen to what the installer and engineer says they don,t come to your house to lie to you. instead of making loads of phone calls getting wound up by some call center speaking to 8 million people trying to blame someone else ,when its your plumbing
ps i never seen anyone do a pressure test before fitting a wm in all my years, i would just suggest y pipe if i was ya fitter or if filled with both on hot wash to blank the hot
I think this machine fils with cold then hot then cold so
as post above says y pipe is best option .edited just re read my response sounds nasty
when i read some posts it just reminds me of those classic words that every engineer must of heared at 1 point of another
it was all right before you touched it 👿
it was not doing that before u touched it 👿April 26, 2008 at 6:07 am #250345expertcat
ParticipantIt seems running on hot and cold water is atrting to be a thing of the past.
Alot of machines are now running on cold water only direct from factory.
In a metre of pipe is a litre of water so with the super energy rating we are wanting now the amount of water to wash has greatly reduced so unless ther machine is next to a kitchen sink and you have just ran the hot water to the sink the chances of any hot water let alone tepid water will be quite small so it will heat it any case.
I have always beleived that the soap powder is more efficient when its cold water fill.
