Participantmy new next door neighbour a bit of a diy head has installed his washing machine in the garage. he didnt tell me its none of my business where he puts it. but there is no drain in the garage so the machine empties out into his back garden at the side of his garden, which is also the side of my garden.
i have never come across this before it doesnt seem right but why is it wrong?
i dont want to get off on the wrong foot but has anyone ever came across this before.surely the waste water will start to smell i know what its like when a machine has been sitting for a couple of days with water in it.

your house will sink as the water will pool by the foundations ring your local council and ask for the building inspector. I had this once and when I went outside to look I sunk up to my ankles.
Best action first is to knock on door with a six pack and a few meters of waste pipe! 😆wilf

Best do as Wilf suggests and advise him as politlely as possible the error of his ways. Otherwise it could create all sorts of long term problems for you both!

If you’ve got any streams or rainwater drains nearby that the water gets into, the environment agency will be hot to pick it up. Could be costly if he doesn’t modify it. Mother in law already been there with a garaged machine draining into wrong drain, set up by previous owner (another avid DIY’er :rolls: ).

At the end of the day he’s discharging his waste water onto your property which is a no-no, shouldn’t be done. For example, what if he worked in a chemical factory and his clothes were saturated with pesticides or worse, these chemicals would then be ‘in the open’ as it were. First thing’s first, talk to the bloke, he may not have thought about it and as soon as you mention it he’ll sort it out. Next write a formal (ish) letter to him stating your concerns then if that fails goto the council and environmental agency. If he doesn’t sort it out after a polite word or a letter then there’s nothing else you can do but report him. Or you could alter the plumbing in your bathroom and reroute your toilet pipework to his garden. Happy days.

thanks again for the replies if i went out to fix a machine which was emptying into the garden i would tell them if they didnt put it right i would have to inform environmental health so i will do exactly the same with my neighbour.
