ParticipantNot sure if this should be here or on technical enquiries!?
Does anyone know of a water filter that could be put in line on the cold inlet pipe to a washing machine that will filter particles (dirt) from the water? The water is coming from a private supply that clogs up the existing filters over a short period of time so it would be nice to trap it some how before hand.About 18 years ago I had a similar situation and I was able to install a changeable filter that had 3/4 inch male threads so it was just a process of connecting up the hoses after the stop tap. It was a one off item I found in an agricultural/ sells everything type merchant and I have been trying to find the same again but with no luck! 🙁
Any help would be much appreciated
Cheers

Many thanks for that Martin,
Yes. The one you found is similar to the one I installed about 18 years ago which had a 3/4 inch thread instead of an inch and was about half the length of the one they are showing on the American website. It is the sort of thing I am after though but smaller and less expensive. Back then it was £15 so probably would be about £30 or £40 now I’ll keep trawling through the internet to see what else I can find, but if anyone has had any recent experience or seen one somewhere that would be really appreciated.
Cheers

Yes, all well and good, but you’d be doing yourself out of a job!!

Sorry Mirmay,I’m not sure I understand you on that one. 😕
If it’s too expensive then I won’t have the job, plus there is a limit to the space available and I don’t get to sell a new ISE. The older valves coped with the situation but the latest valves seem to be clogging as shown on the present machine and the previous which was 12 months ago. The customer really hates the present machine and has never got on with it hence the introduction to the ISE. The customer loves all of it green credentials for the ISE and it’s simplicityAny thoughts and suggestion on how I can inexpensively filter the inlet would be appreciated.

Well (pardon the pun for starters) if the water to the machine could be fed from a cold water header tank sufficiently high enough to give enough pressure (head of water). The mucky well water could deposit its sediment within the confines of the tank and thus reduce the amount that is currently going to it direct from the well.
Every once in a while the header tank could be flushed/syphoned out to remove the heavy sedimentary particles…..
…..ISE one! 💡

Martin…you’re a star 8)
I’ve already had to fit a header tank in another property to cope with pressure problems with a new machine.
You’re absolutely right any sediment would settle. It’s a much better long term solution and saves filters having to be renewed annually. That’s what I love about this forum…pooling ideas. I’ll go back and do a survey and see if it’s possible……and if she’s prepared to pay!
Oh the joys of rural living! :rolls: It’s never straight forward.June 20, 2011 at 9:38 am #353829odom

If they don’t want the cost of a tank I’ve got a few rural customers where I’ve fitted caravan water filters to, which does the same job. Something like this: –

All connections are 1/2″ rather than 3/4″ but easy job to step down and filters are stainless steel so can be taken out and cleaned from time to time.

Chris,
That’s a very good idea and well within budget and a much simpler solution. How fine is the strainer? is it like a mesh or a sieve or like a ‘tea’ strainer in terms of hole size do you know?
I think I will get one posted and give it a go. If it works out successful then its probably worth getting a few in stock ready. Many thanks for that

Holes are very small – 0.3mm – finer than a tea strainer or sieve. They’re much more effective than the standard ones at the end of inlet hoses but not too small that they block up all the time. They’re designed to protect pumps so I assume are a little overspecced for solenoid valves, but you could always use a coarser filter if needed.
Hope it works well for you.
