ParticipantHello there.
I’ve just bought a bearing set for an Indesit WIE167. I’ve already watched all of the videos I could find on the web and the job didn’t look too hard. However instead of the removable front to the machine and a splittable plastic (outer) tub that I expected, I found the front was welded on and the tub is continuous stainless steel. After searching around I thought it may be a sealed unit thus chuck the whole thing. However my tub looks very similar to the one shown here (http://www.ukwhitegoods.co.uk/help/buyi … -care.html). So my question is, how do I get access to the bearings and are there any problems with drifting them out?
I have a suspicion as to how I might be able to do it, but our kitchen is very tiny hence a biggy to carry out my idea, also if it goes horribly wrong I cannot afford to just go and get another, so I would like a better idea as to how to proceed. Thanks for reading

If its a stainless steel outer tank then the bearings are in the spider mounted in te rear of the tank. Depending the model some are aluminium and some are cast iron. Either way tip the machine onto its front on plenty of padding, remove the rear panel, there are 8 bolts that hold the spider to the tank.
Tbh this is not a simple Job on one of these are the spider it’s difficult to remove and one wrong slip and you will puncture the tank.

Thank you,
I suspected I might have to rotate it (that’s the problem in such a small space. And then attack the spider Torx bolts (now difficult due to even less space. I’ll give it a go. Thanks again.

TBH you should have tried to get the old bearings out first, if you find that the drum shaft is badly damaged then it will need a complete drum assembly. The edges are also like razors inside these, have plasters and bandages to hand. 😥

Well, it took and impact driver to get the central pulley bolt out, something I havn’t used since I stripped a bike engine in ’85 (!). Taking the spider Torx bolts out was easy. Then I came to a dead halt. The spider is completely jammed into the rim of the s/s drum and if I applied any more leverage I would have punctured the drum. I tried hammering it tangentially, it wouldn’t move, even so much as to make re-insertion of the bolts difficult(!). I then spotted the wedge shaped shim, which seemed to maybe be the key to it all, but this will not move either-I actually broke a bit of this off. At this point I gave up, along with my now-fragile back and put it back together again. I’ll have to think again as to whether it is possible at all, I’m beginning to think it is too jammed solid to proceed further.

This is a job for an experienced engineer. They are tight and have to be rotated once the bolts removed

Take the pulley of and hit the drum shaft with a copper mallet to loosen the drum from the bearings then you will find the bearing spider easier to move
