This will probably sound very simple but can anyone kindly give me some advice? My washing machine has decided it no longer wants to wash. In fact, it pretends to be interested but doesn’t really seem to care!

I have a HOTPOINT 9536. It starts up ok, takes in water, turns several times, as usual, and stops and that’s it. The water slowly drains away and the programme timer continues for the remainder of the ‘cycle’, although nothing further happens. I’ve noticed that the water retained initially is warm but I guess this is drawn directly from hot feed?

My guess is that the heating element or thermostat may have failed. What is the ‘expert’ opinion? What do I need to check?

    All thoughts greatly appreciated. JM

I expect the cold inlet valve has failed and it doesn’t take in cold water during the rinse part of the cycle….correct?

    Thanks for reply.

No, it stops very early into the cycle, just after the fill. The rinse cycle comes later – it doesn’t get that far.
Actually, the soap tablets remain soggy in their bag, come to think of it.

I don’t think this is the cause? JM

If the dial continues right through to the 0 end of programme and water comes in at intervals and then drains out, then you’ve probably got a “motor not turning”. This is likely to be the easily repairable “motor brushes worn down” problem. I’m logging off for the weekend but someone will surely enlighten you further should it be necessary.
    Mike.

Do this check then. Set it (without washing) on the programme that failed. But turn OFF the hot water stopcock, and leave the cold on…..does it fill with cold I wonder?

I’m puzzled by this statement though I must admit 😕

What happens if you set the machine to spin, or rinse & spin? I have never changed a thermostat on this model and if the heater was faulty it would not continue the programme unless you have the ecnomy button selected.

Re: WASHING MACHINE IS DOING SOMETHING STRANGE!

Thanks, I will try to eliminate the cold feed symptom by trying your suggestion.

My wife tells me that the when she last tried the machine, the MCB for the kitchen blew and had to be reset – the washing machine is mid cycle at this point but although the timer ‘completed’ its cycle, clothing had not been washed.

In respect to water ‘draining away’, the washing may have aborbed most of the water but a ‘pool still remains. I assumed that water may have drained away but this may not be the case.

Given that the washing machine may have tripped the supply, does this shed any light on the matter?

I agree with Mike, it does sound like motor brushes, please unplug if you intend to have a look. As the machine has caused a trip to go, I would suggest that you do not keep trying the machine until you have checked the brushes, you can do further damage if you do.

Re: WASHING MACHINE IS DOING SOMETHING STRANGE!

I’ve just tried MARTIN’s suggestion to retry the 60degree wash programme but with the HOT stopcock OFF. He’s absolutely right, the machine doesn’t take in cold water and makes an sound like a stuck motor – I guess the solenoid valve is broken?

Can this be gotten to work? Any suggestions? JM

Re: WASHING MACHINE IS DOING SOMETHING STRANGE!

I see that the cold inlet valve is a double valve (whereas the inner hot valve is a single type). Judging by the wiring, the outer half of the cold is marked FABRIC and the middle valve COLD.

How do I electrically test this before I remove it?

Re: WASHING MACHINE IS DOING SOMETHING STRANGE!

On this machine 95° and 60° washes are hot fill only, so if you turn the hot water off the buzzing noise is the hot valve trying to fill, it is working correctly, all other fills are mixed.

If it fills hot or mixed for the wash and fills cold only on the rinse then your valves are perfectly OK.

Have you checked the brushes ❓ ❓

Can you explain how I check the brushes?

Re: WASHING MACHINE IS DOING SOMETHING STRANGE!

I’ve located and removed the motor brushes and there is still some travel on the spring loaded carbon brushes. There’s about 3mm of travel on the LEFT brush and about 5-6mm on the RIGHT. Not sure what the standard is?

The motor does apparantly turn normally after initial fill but does nothing afterwards.

Does this still seem a brush problem?

    Any further guidance?

We cannot go into chapter and verse for safety reasons, suffice it to say there are two brushes in the main motor.

As an afterthought, has the machine been very noisy recently?

To my knowledge, no the machine has not been abnormally noisy recently.
