Here is what happened.
We had done a wash and the machine had turned off. Display was blank (as normal)
We were going away for a few days so I turned the main water stopcock off. The tap feeding the WM was left on, and the mains was left on. The WM door was left open as is normal. Remember the machine was off, nothing on the display but still powered.
3 days later we came back. The display was flashing “Le” the drum was full of water to the point some (not much) had spilled our of the open door and flooded the utility room.
I would like a professional opinion, but here is my theory:
This is a microcontroller based machine.
I believe the software glitched and turned on the fill valve even though nobody had instructed the machine to start. To understand how that can happen with the door open, you need to realise on these modern machines the door switch is just another input to the microcontroller not a hard wired real interlock like they used to be.
So the fill valve had allowed water in. Because the stopcock was off, there was only the water left in the pipes to drain by gravity into the machine. That was lucky as I am sure the flooding would have been very serious if the stopcock had been on with an unlimited supply of water.
I have seen this soer of software glitch before, e.g microwave oven started all by itself, but thankfully with those the door interlock is a proper interlock so just leaving the door ajar prevents that happening.
The machine has since ran through a full was cycle so it is not “broken”
Is this a plausible reason for what happened? any other theories? Anyone experienced it before.
In the past I always used to turn off the mains and water to a WM when not in use, but my wife kept telling me I was being silly. “told you so” sounds quite sweet now.

Faulty water inlet valve the main suspect.
Electromagnetic valves only seat and seal under pressure from the incoming water supply. Once that pressure reduces dramatically then that valve will open and allow water to slowly drip into the machine. Over several hours it will “flood” the surrounding area as it exits the door or soap drawer.
The reason the machine came on was due to the water level switch within operating and, as the machine was still plugged in, it fired up the electronics.
Replace the water inlet valve to be sure it won’t happen again. Next time unplug machine and switch off the stop cock might be the best and secure solution to going away.

So why did it not also turn on the drain pump?

Anti flood device probably.
