hi, i have a hotpoint first edition wm52 that is struggling to spin. its 5 years old. 🙁
when it gets spinning its fine, but it struggles to get going- its like the motor is trying to spin 10kg of washing.
the bushes were in pretty bad condition (and i mean bad. the plastic on the spade connectors had melted a bit). i’ve changed these to eliminate them as a problem but it makes no difference.
the belt and tension are fine.
i’ve removed the belt and the drum spins perfectly, no play or friction from the bearings.
the motor appears to move freely too when spun by hand.
with a medium load of washing the problem occurs.
with no washing the problem doesnt occur.
the copper wire on the motor is fairly sooty. when it tries to get going there are a few more sparks than when it is actually spinning. nothing that causes me concern, but i’m no electrician.
everything else seems fine. it fills and emptys with no problem.
    anyody have any suggestions?
great site by the way- i spent a couple of hours yesterday scanning through the topics.
    thanks, kristian

SDuspect dry/poor joint on speed control module or timer module depending on which is fitted.

silly question- whats the speed control module look like? i’m competent(ish) when it comes to pcbs so i’ll give it a go.

This machine should have the hybrid control unit, all functions controlled by the one component.

When you have the machine on wash (not spin) with the medium load in, does the drum start to revolve smoothly or does the motor ‘hum’ for a second or so before turning ? If so then it sounds like an armature fault.

Re: Washing Machine struggling to spin

    i’d say it hums.
with the lid off the washing machine i can physically see the motor trying to turn the drum.
best way to describe it is like trying to pull away in a car in 2nd or even 3rd gear. it gets going, but looks like it struggles to get going.
the motor starts to rotate the belt, but in tiny 1″ increments like a jolt/judder rather than a single flow. then it gets going like normal.

is this one of those “you need to replace the whole motor so you’re better off buying a new wasing machine” type failure, or can the armature be replaced?

Sorry, I should of made myself a bit more clearer.

I’m 90{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} sure that you need an armature to repair that motor. Some of the armatuers are obsolete. If you email spares@ukwhitegoods.co.uk with your model number, they can provide an armature if it’s available, or a motor if it’s not.

Or you can always use Repairs@ if you don’t fancy changing the armature/motor yourself. And if your having a look yourself, unplug the appliance first!
