Washing machine trips RCD – motor?

Two years old, just out of guarantee.

Symptoms – tripped RCD.

I have checked the brushes and there’s plenty left on them. If the motor electrical connector is unplugged it works. Plug back in and as soon as the cycle starts the RCD trips.

Is it definitely the motor, and if so is it likely to be economical to repair (I’m not up to fitting a motor myself, and they look to be quite expensive)?

It does sound like the motor, very expensive sadly.

As far as I can tell, the symptoms are identical to an 8 year old AEG 6100 Digitronic I had, and finding web search replacement costs of £400 for a new motor I scrapped it and bought an ISE1606W. [That turned out to be a very unfortunate decision when it failed last month and I found they’d gone bust]. Because the AEG was in otherwise excellent condition and a half decent spec I wish now that I had taken the motor down to my local motor repairers (one in most major towns?) and at least got them to quote for a repair. I’ve had car motors/alternators repaired at very reasonable prices, might be worth a phone call to get an idea of a re-build price? If total repair cost is more than a third the price of a new machine then sadly myself I’d probably buy a new machine these days. I’ve now become pretty disillusioned about spending significant money repairing white goods 🙁
