A titanium dioxide nanoparticle 2,500 times smaller than a human hair from a spray can. When the particles are sprayed on clothing then exposed to sunlight they react with the oxygen in the air and begin to break down organic dirt and stains.
“The process that is already used to create self-cleaning windows and is kinder to clothing than dry cleaning is likely to interest detergent manufacturers within the next 5 years. Probably marketing as a ‘Self-cleaning Spray’ so as to grab some of the action this technology creates.” So says Andy Garland of the Institute of Nanotechnology in Stirling. 😯
