ParticipantI have a Hotpoint WD420 (i know..). We had a problem a few months back where it errored on drying.
So, I read a few posts, got the idea to clean the filter out. Done this, and it was still broken. Washing seemed to still work, so we just hung things out, as it was summer it wasnt a big issue. But clothes started to smell really nasty within the last 6 weeks
Now, as its too cold to dry anything, I need to use the dryer. Yesterday I decided to take a look. The machine seemed to be filled with water (below the drum line) I managed to moe the drum a bit to get it to splash up. Smelt the water and it was fine. So I done a pump out, and then a test dry and it worked! Hurrah! But the teatowel wasnt dry…
I then put on a 95degree wash for said teatowel and it came out cold.
It looks like i’ve fixed the dryer so it doesnt error, but neither of the heating elements are working.
Any ideas?

Participantthe cut outs probably gone
dependant on variant it will either have a toc on the front of the heater box, inline with the element, or a thermal fuse…identified by an orange sheath over the link cable
whichever one is on, a simple test with a multimeter will confirm if its faulty
DO NOT bypass it to test it, and make sure the plug is out when you do, components are live most of the time, and trust me, it hurts

woo. It’s working! I just hope it works for good.
I took the pump filter out, again, and it had a few things in it. So cleared these out. Then i detached the waste pipe from the pump and noticed some string (!) where the motor was, so got some computer tweezers out to grab it.
Not thinking that was enough, I read on an other forum about the thermostat, and how to reset it. So thought i’d give it ago.
Take the top off the machine, looking down from the front, there is a metal panel/tube. near the front on the right hand side there is a black sensor, the size of a 2p coin, with 2 cables attached. In the center of this is a painted dot (red, blue, yellow etc), I pushed a pin into this and it made a click. That meant the thermostat had been reset.
Put the machine on dry for 30 mins and it worked! Its not on a 95degree wash with dry to try and get rid of the smell.
This is the website i got my info from: http://www.howtomendit.com/answers.php?id=125258 – thanks to that man!

As a warning to you and any others, the stat is NOT designed to be re-set, you can cause a fire hazard by your method, a safety stat is just that, and single use only, get it replaced with a new one asap

Participantyes well done to you for going to howtomendit to find out what id already posted.. what you resetting safety stats ( and you would have had to MAKE a hole, you forgot to mention that bit) and the other guy who reprogrammed his iz module
here at whitegoods, safety is and always will be paramount

Sorry, where did you post that in this thread? You told me to test it with a multimeter. Not to reset it…

Participanti didnt tell you to rest it,i asked you not to bypass it
we dont recommend resetting cutouts.. theyve cut out for a reason.. hotpoint strongly advise changing them for safety reasons
so much so, theyve redesigned the heater box to incorporate a one shot fuse so its no longer possible.
its a little irresponsible for any website to advise that resetting a cut out is ok, youd be really sorry if you woke up to find the house on fire for the sake of a £4-43 part?
it does sound a little harsh, but we have to consider the publics safety as we have absolutely no idea of your technical ability
like i say , we’ll always try to help, just not at the cost of yours and your familys safety
anyway, further to that, alls good, youve found the fault, and, yes, thats the right part, changing it would be the sensible option
good luck!

Ok, sounds like I got caught out by the terminology you were using.
I’ve ordered a part and wont use the machine until it arrives.
Thanks for the help

Sorry to drag up, but thought i’d post my results.
Took the machine apart and swapped the cut out. Put her back together, done a dummy run and its all good.
Done 4 wash/drys since and still working fine.
Thanks for all of the help
