What keywords and phrases do they keep you on a high profile for? This service is usually expensive because it’s extremely hard work and search engine optimization is a very inexact science at the moment. I was just wondering as some keywords or phrases you wmay automatically do well for regardless of any intervention (if they aren’t competative)

Obvious words, such as:- Washing Machine, Dishwasher, Cooker, Refrigerator etc. Makers names help a lot as well. A good web host is important too.

My web guy (when he is around), keeps mine up there whilst he is ensuring his site keeps a high profile.

    Re: Web Site

Your site doesn’t rank in the top 1000 results on Google for any of those keywords. You must be getting hits from somewhere though, but not those type of keywords 🙂 “Washing machine” for example brings up just under 2 million pages. It’s incredibly competative.

Do you check your logs to see where your traffic comes from? Maybe you just leave it to the third party. I don’t want to cause any trouble, I just can’t see how the site could rank well in any search engine as there’s virtually no content for search engines to pick up on. I just wondered if someone was charging for not doing much.

    Re: Web Site

There is a reason for the above. The site is under reconstruction, we are doing a complete re-work, which will include pointers on every page. As a result it is in abeyance, plus the guy that has been doing the work is in the Phillipines at the mo.

I don’t pay a penny for the site maintenance, but will have to for the re-write.

    No it was tiolet paper.

Anyway, at long last I’ve revamped the site completely, this time I used a professional. Will take a week or two to get up on the high profile search engines. I’m sending Ken the music on MP3.

Sadly, I did take a look and quite honestly is was….well…fine 😉

Bit brave putting up your Service Charges though I thought, possibly might put a few ‘Internet anoraks’ off maybe 😕 I personally avoid telling them my charges to the point of contact on the phone. It works better for me that way 🙂

P.S. Please tell me you were teasing about the music though 😉

It’s much better than the old one, and much more professional-looking, I’m afraid the site is very unlikely get high in the search engine rankings at all though, as it’s not even remotely optimized for them.

?? What ?? I’ve just put “dishwasher repair somerset” on Jeeves and we are up there 3 times. The top one is the new site, the lower ones take you to the old site. The old site is being modified and within a week only the new site will show.

I’m assured we will be on Google but it may take a week or so. I looked this afternoon and we were third using the same key words, tonight we are not showing on google, but I’m confident that is being adressed.

I take Martin’s point regards charges, but I’m an advocator of being up front. I find most who want a repair, want an instant response and will pick up the phone. Spares sales is the cash generator & generates most traffic from the web I find.

The other thing is that unless you want to try to get business from the internet, barring specific searches like the one Alex outlined, then web optimisation is pretty much useless to you especially to a small localised business. Most repairers I think should have a site, even if it is only a single page with contact details and what they do on it, but real optimisation for searching either costs loads of time or money, often both as far as I can see. Also, unless you are etailing to see a sizeable return, most small business could spend the money better elsewhere I feel.

The only way around that is solely down to content and actually having the information or products on the site that the surfer was actually looking for in the first place. Otherwise, it’s just another 30 second, or less, visit.

Why do you need to be top of the list with a company trying to attract business within a 50 mile (say) radius?

Surely you need to be top – in Somerset?

    Re: Web Site

To heck with web site optimisation, unless you have pages and pages of text, search engines will give you a lower ranking however much you try.

Alex has created a neat and tidy site which is all that is required I reckon.

Just one more point if I may, if you show your web site address on your ‘other’ advertising (i.e.added to your Yellow Pages advert*) often potential new customers will look it up for further information anyway 😉

    Martin

    * but do not pay Yellow Pages for a ‘Weblink’ though = rip off prices!

There are good reasons for website optimisation if you sell or are lookin to garner a massive audience, usually to either sell (as mentioned) or to gain income through advertising. Other then that, for us at least, I think it merely serves as a glorified brochure describing what you do in more detail.

    Re: Web Site

“dishwasher repair somerset” is a search term that no one is competing for. There is no site that I can find that is competing for it, so it’s one of those search terms that even a very badly designed page can get high on search engines for. In fact most of the ones brought up by Yahoo and Google are awful. With a bit of search engine otimizing, I recon you could dominate all the search engines for that term.

The same goes for “washing machine repairs somerset” etc etc.

I agree with K about trying to get high for less definitive and fiercely competative search terms like “washing machine repairs” which I’m currently number 1 on google for, and number 1, 3 and 6 for on Yahoo. And “washing machine spares” which I’m also number one on Google for. I’m also number 6 out of 1,830,000 results for “washing machine” Thses kind of results need a lot of hard work and knowledge, but as K says, they aren’t necessary for a local repair company trying to raise their profile and attract custom in their local area. There may be thousands of people who search for “washing machine repairs”, but they will be distributed all over the UK.
