Hi UKW – I’m just admiring your shopping car – its nice and fast – any advice on how I can implement similar as an add on to my own business? I’m a complete noobie when it comes to this

    Re: Website advice

Thank you, there’s a lot of work went into making that work including custom servers, upgrades and a hell of a lot of backend work on the IT that’s cost a small fortune. Thankfully it all pretty much benefits the main site as well as we sink cash into making it go fast.

However, there are several ways, depends on what suits you in all honesty.

The easy way and, least profitable, is you simply let someone else do it for you. You also don’t control your own site or have any say in a lot of things as a general rule so, if you do choose this route, make sure you fully trust the partner you choose.

If you want to do it yourself totally then you will need to either code it yourself, hire someone to do it or a mix of both. You will need a good hosting company and technical support I should think. A lot of what we’ve done is custom coding to make it fast and to work the way we want it to and that costs I’m afraid, a lot!

The beauty of doing it yourself is that you’re the retailer and you control your own destiny, not someone else. You also control the content and what you sell or don’t sell.

Just like a shop on the high street, if your name’s above the door then you’re responsible and you must always bear this in mind so a to comply with distance selling regulations.

I’m trying to dance around saying what I really think about some people that will allow you to have a “virtual” shop although I’m sure you’ll get the gist of it. We’ve had a few offers and refused them all, I think that says it all. 😉

After that you get into the internet “black magic” that makes it all worthwhile which, trust me, isn’t an easy thing to get a grip of if you’re not completely engrossed in the internet and all it can do. Let’s just leave it at, it’s not as easy as plonking a shop online and people will buy stuff from you as, if it was that easy, there’d be a lot more online.

Like most businesses it takes a LOT of work, a LOT of knowledge and a LOT of luck to succeed.

Then, on top of all that, you have to keep up to date with all the technologies in use and stay in front filtering out what’s hype and what’s useful.

    K.
