This is good news for us, the independents.

You have to assume that this council have done their research of the directive and the legal implications of charging to remove an old appliance.
From a rate payers view, I think they should and not use the rates to subsidise this service.
From a business point of view, it will cost us all to remove waste from the customer, why should we the independents, buy a license and then pay for the disposal of an appliance, at a council depot.
According to this councils advert the customer pays far less (£15.00) than we would have to.

Hope my council does it too.

Cheaper still round here, (nothing) at the moment they only charge for fridge removal even though it says it is free on this link.

Yep it will indeed do us all a lot of good, I totally agree.

What I don’t agree with is the local councils eliciting a “tax” to collect waste on top of what they already get paid in Council Tax to provide the services anyway. Especially when, I think, the average Council Tax across the UK has risen by 113{e5d1b7155a01ef1f3b9c9968eaba33524ee81600d00d4be2b4d93ac2e58cec2d} over the past ten years. I can assure you that my salary has not risen in line with that figure and it’s just a tad above inflation.

Off track, but a point.

It also strikes me that if the council can get away with a “tax” to dispose of refuse then so can a retailer, or can they? It’s yet to be seen how the WEEE Regulations actually pan out in law, but it could be very interesting if government has a different set of rules from corporate bodies.
