ParticipantBeen to 3 Crossley type T/D looking up parts on connect and couldn’t believe the different price! for the same part.
Lux T/D micro switch £12.28 ssp £21.13 profit about £9.00
White Knight micro switch £4.51 ssp £6.63 profit about £2.00
Whirlpool micro switch £36.29 ssp £44.89 profit about £8.50I will certainly spend more time in future before I order, how can Whirlpool justify 8 times the price.

Good spot Kirk,
This one of those on going “backburner “projects which will hopefully lead to a big splash at some point. You think that’s bad – Bosch are selling a badged Whirlpool dryer at the moment – you can by the element for £20, its £103 from Bosch 😯 . And, there’s plenty more!Post ’em as you find ’em!

What an excellent idea!
Why not start a topic in tech enquiries titled something like ‘Manufacturer Cross Reference’ ? ….we could all post individual part similarities between different manufacturers, not only useful for the cheapest part but also when a manufacturer/supplier is out of stock of that particular bit?

I don’t wish to dampen your enthusiasm unnecessarily over this laudable idea but it is an almost impossible task owing to the vast data input that would be required for it to succeed 🙁
The good news is that we (in the trade) have access to ‘cross referencing’ spares data available direct from the likes of Qualtex, Invicta, Maddocks, Masterpart etc etc.( and I do NOT refer to ‘pattern spares’) They strive all the while to impart that information to us using their extensive dedicated databases. It therefore is up to the individual to be aware of the options available to be certain to save money and secure the job at the right price using this method.
What does concern me though is the practices of certain wholesalers of genuine spare parts very often realise the cross referencing of spares. And when one orders for example a W???????? genuine part, they send a B???? part (identical) that is cheaper for them to buy BUT they then charge it to you at the W???????? price 🙁
I will say no more on that score for obvious reasons, but my advice is to shop around 8)

KeymasterIf you want, the software has already been written to do this and I can get it at a cost. No idea what the cost would be but it’s already populated with a whole load of data.
Whether it can be used on the web or not I really don’t know as it was a stand-alone product the last I saw it.
And if you think those variations are bad, price up MFI vs. GBDAR on A. Merloni spares or some of the likes of Tecnik vs. Whirlpool. It is a tad depressing at times though seeing just how much we’re being ripped off for on spares.

Martin….on the whole i’d agree…most of the suppliers i deal with (including all those you mention) i have been trading with for a number of years so one gets to know the right people to talk to when their particular computer won’t tell them which part may be a suitable alternative. However one example springs to mind…a few weeks ago i was asked to repair a De Dietrich steam oven, very expensive and ok not very common but not very old either. The water supply regulator had failed and De Dietrich technical told me it was obsolete and there was no way to repair the appliance (!)
After chatting to a couple of mates in the trade i discovered that the identical part was available with a totally different part number for a totally different model. Fortunately my customer hadn’t yet replaced the offending machine so i was able to repair it for a small cost.
So….little gems like that, posted here just might get someone out of a hole…and wouldn’t bring the internet highway down to a 10 mph limit 😉March 7, 2005 at 10:07 pm #127612Phidom

I find I tend to partly absorb the rip-off prices myself by only adding a small amount for profit. If I pay £4 for a fan oven element I will cheerfully charge £22 for it but if I have to pay £32 for an almost identical element I will probably only charge £37 for it. My latest shock was a main oven thermostat for a Servis cooker, £82 trade, £111 retail!
