Had a call from my neighbour who lives two doors away requesting her machine to be drained out as it blew up. She got warranty with Currys as part of family fund deal. The engineers won’t come out till Monday.

So I went over to her house and drained the machine and collected her washing to finish off in my washing machine.

She phoned my wife asking if I would be charging her for the work. Perish the thought(!). My wife replied no and offered to use our machine to do her washing.

The neighbour remarked on how good her machine was (hoover), used 5-6 times a day and only had it for two years. The board blew up btw. Had that replaced twice.

I can’t decide which is more shocking 1) going to work in my pyjamas
    2) doing it all free of charge and do her washing as well
    3) her Hoover used 5-6 times a day and lasted for 2 years?

It’s the wife – she who must be obeyed. That’s why!

Winds me right up when neighbours expect you to call out for nothing so I don’t do it :). Baa humbug

Yeah, its a slippery slope, you need to charge something regardless of how close they are.

If they’re friends it’s more difficult it must be said, some of our friends are very grateful for work I do for them and insist on paying something, some just totally take the p*ss and often dont even pay me for the bloody parts! 👿

Yep. Good friends expect to pay and always offer, it’s friends you only hear from when something goes wrong that wind me up

It’s not that bad honest. She won’t hire me for the job since I charged her for the repair of her tumble dryer.

All she wanted her machine drained so it would not stink over the weekend. We help each other out kids wise.

Like madmac says its a slippery slope, is it just next door neighbours or people in the same street
If their close neighbours/friends then obviously I’d do a good deal but no way would I supply parts free.
Worst of all you get a call from someone you don’t know that lives just around the corner expecting freebies

Did a door handle kit replacement for a close relative. Had to visit to them to get the model no, as they had no idea, get the part, called back another day at a pre arranged time and then wait 30 min as they got delayed. They asked how much and l being an idealist told them the price of the part £5, and that is what l got.

I had hoped they would add extra to cover costs, not even a gesture. Nada.

That was around 18 months ago, they rang around 6 months ago asking if l would replace the on/off button.

I just cant seem to find the time.:P
