We currently have a Hotpoint Aquarius 1200 WM64, which has served us very well for about 9 years at an average of about 2 washes per day for that period – coping with the clothes washing needs of 3 very active children (currently aged 3,5 & 7). Apart from a couple of brush replacements, a leaky seal and a loose door hinge it has been problem free.

I’m now thinking that our luck cannot last forever with this machine & that sooner or later it will require some serious money spent. however I’d like to be prepared with a view on repair vs replacement cost.

If I were to set myself a budget of say £400 what would your recommendation be to get a new machine which could give us this level of reliability? or is the machine a particulaly good design that we should try to keep ‘on the road’ if things go wrong?

Whilst £400 takes you into Bosch, Siemens mid range territory, and they are good machines, I have many hundreds of customers with Hotpoint machines that are between 15 & 20 years old and working perfectly. If you put the clothes in dirty and they come out clean, what more do you want. 😉

As long as it is not excessively noisy and you do a regular maintenance wash with good quality detergents, you should with luck, get several more years out of it.

The only parts that could be considered ‘ too expensive’ on a machine of this age are the outer/inner drum and possibly the control unit. If you have the early GDA motor with the brushes that slide out then that can also be stripped down and repaired at reasonable cost. If has never had the door interlock changed it may be advisable to do so, along with motor arcing faults, a door lock failure is one of the most common causes of control unit failure.

PS. You should also consider this. http://tinyurl.com/q6ahg 8)
