ParticipantI need to buy a new washing machine soon and am hoping I’ll be able to afford a Miele. However, I can’t find one on most websites (for general public purchase, not industrial ones) larger than 6kg capacity and I need to know whether I could wash a double duvet in this size of machine. Can anyone advise please? If it is too small, what other makes of washing machine would you recommend, and what size do I need? Thanks in advance.

A 6kg machine will just wash 1 single douvet. Given modern digital control systems, it probably won’t get spun properly due to the out of balance circuitry.
I think you can extrapolate from there…….

Thanks very much for your response. It’s pretty evident duvets need to go elsewhere for cleaning. A pity. I wonder why I’ve so often read of them being washed in machines?

Hi Danneal,
Have a read at this article as it may well explain it better.
What the marketing guys say and what the machines actually do are often worlds apart. 😉

Sorry if this seems a dumb question, but would a double blanket (acrylic) be just as impossible?

Hi Danneal,
A double blanket will be okay in a 5-6Kg machine if you’re talking about the outer cover for a “feather” duvet. Sheets and blankets don’t cause too much of a problem, it’s large duvets that do and to be honest I’d always recommend that they are professionally cleaned.

Thanks, KWatt. By blanket I mean the old-fashioned thing, sometimes made of wool but in this case acrylic. It’s thick but not puffy like a duvet, and isn’t a cover of any sort. I suspect it would overload a 5 or 6 kg machine.

General rule of thumb is you need 10cm between the top of the load and the top of the drum aperture. Or about a handwidth, otherwise there won’t be enough movement to allow the clothing or, in this case, blanket to clean properly.
Even on large capacity machines this is an issue.
You can read more on overloading washing machines in this article 😉
