(Please excuse my ignorance but) What is the little brush pick up that rubs against the metal band strapped around the drum of some tumble dryers for? 😕

Sensor dryer, that’s the sensor. 😉

    Re: What is it?

Very often they are made up of a copper brush ( and in later more sophisticated machines the use of carbon brushes is commonplace) that rubs against the metal band.

The purpose being that when coupled to an electronic sensor (module) it measures the impedance between 2 given points. Usually that is between that metal band and the small metal disk located centrally in the drum. The impedance varies according to the level of dampness (humidity) within the drum and the module calculates the total dry time required to complete the process. 😉

It does not measure heat. That is done by the thermostats that operate independently of the sensing process by the way. 8)

    Re: What is it?

Cheers Martin! So now i know.
I kind of thought it would have to be to do with sensing moisture (humidity) not heat but the copper brush and metal band confused me a bit until you explained the impedence part of the equation.
