Participant?when working on appliances. what is the lowest excipable meg ohm insulation reading you should be happy with.
to give the applianc a clean bill of health over all when
testing at the plug.after completing a repair.should one lead of the insulation tester be connected across the L and N and the other to E or the live and netural tested seperatly to E
and what is the excipable insulation reading on moter heater ect. so you know that a break down in insulation is not causing the problum with the appliance. i know the first test should be a good earth path. thanks fasetester.

Officially it is 1M?. Others will be quick to say I’m wrong as it is 2M? but in essence 2 or greater is not only acceptable but should not trip any modern RCD/MCB’s.
Having said that I would not even accept that and would insist on at least 40M? as anything less indicates an insulation problem somewhere that needs checking out! 😉
By the way fase, I love the question mark (?) as at last you have used one. One slight problem…..should be at the end of the sentence really. 😉

was 0.5m when I did my Robin training some years back, I think 2m at the factory door but as soon as its installed its 0.5
as Martin said, other than some cookers would investigate if it was so low.
ps what does excipable mean anyway? 😛March 5, 2013 at 6:55 pm #391606iadom

Sorry I forgot to add……….
Yes indeed it is always a good idea to check the appliances earth path between the earth pin and an earth point (preferably at the front of the appliance e.g door hinge or any exposed metal surface) reading from the ?’s scale an acceptable reading of 1? is ideal. 😀

Yes you short out the L & N pins with one lead and the other lead on the E pin. Only with the On/Off switch switch to on the insulation test will not compromise the electronics.

I made up a short lead for doing this with a good quality single extension socket & a short length of flex. Just join & solder the L/N wires at the end & solder the Earth wire for a good connection, when you want to do insulation tests just plug in & connect your Megger. Saves messing about trying to bridge the terminals together with a crock clip or probe.

Did same and terminated in 4mm plugs to go straight in the meter but it’s been in the drawer for years as space & weight is at a premium for me.

Bet the bike keeps you fit though Mike 🙂 I keep my lead in the Megger case so it’s always to hand when testing.
