ParticipantAs i’m fairly busy and a person who finds it hard to say no i always find myself promising people i get out to them as soon as possible. The end result the last few years is rushing around stressed like an idiot trying to keep people happy…
Unfortunately now it’s affecting my health. I’m getting episodes of fairly rapid tachycardia 130-150 bpm easily which isn’t pleasant and can be quite scary…. doc says it’s due to stress..
So to try and combat the stress at the moment i will only do so many calls a day and the rest goes into the next day and so on.. So what are your average call out times once you get a call? 2 days, 3 days? i mean i had 2 people call me today and because i wouldn’t go out today all the humming and hawing on the phone peed me off. I told another woman it could be Friday or saturday before getting to her dishwasher and the response was ” Oh my god woe is me what am i going to do until then ” π

I do 4/5 jobs a day maximum and take wednesdays off and no weekend work.
Most customers are seen within two days.
As I have virtually no overheads that gives me a good living without the stress.
I was on the treadmill for many years chasing and acheiving targets which in the end got me nowhere.
Your health is more important than someones broken dishwasher.Steve.

Coincidentally I was talking about this topic just yesterday.
I’m a new starter with little service work, so I’ll attend a job the same day I receive it if the customer agrees.
As for my daily workload, I give myself 5 Hotpoint dryer mods per day. This, as mentioned above, gives me a stress free day with plenty of time to overcome any on-site problems, or take an urgent service call if one comes in.
Sometimes I’ll do an extra one or two Hotpoint mods if the previous five went without hitch. I know it means ringing them on spec, but most people are glad to hear from you. I’ve only ever had one that thought I was a scam artist because I rang from a mobile.
I now choose my areas carefully as I have a mental breakdown when I find myself in traffic jams. I can’t and won’t touch Cheshire ever again, as the daily radio traffic reports ALWAYS feature a problem in the Cheshire Triangle of the M6, M56, M62 & M53. Manchester, Warrington, Runcorn and the areas just south of them can collapse into a sinkhole for all I care. Horrendous driving experiences in and around those places.
We’re dead a long time once we depart this life, so to Hell with making the little time we have here stressful in the pursuit of a living wage. The more potterability you have in your job, the happier you will be, that I guarantee. If it’s more & more money you desire from your work, and stress being a byproduct of it….remember, there’s no shops, banks and ATMs in the nullness of death.

Bet you all have a same day call available if the rate is good enough. π
If it’s Β£150 or summat bet they can have whatever time they want too.

I try to keep the call out time down to 2 to 3 days for domestic and 1 to 2 days for commercial jobs. Obviously if they are desperate then I have an emergency call out fee and I fit them in at a moments notice. Saying that though I run my company on a semi part time basis anyway so I don’t get that many jobs in per day. I try to restrict myself to 3 jobs per day unless I get really busy. I’m restricted by my hours as I’m run this business around my family so have school times and wife’s work commitments to adhere to, unless I can organise childcare in advance. I have been known to take my daughter with me to jobs and many of my customers love it when she comes along with me. She is like my company mascot!!
I wouldn’t change the way I run my business as my family come first. Nobody lay on their death bed and wished they had spent more time at the office!! Working myself into an early grave just to make sure someone can get clean dishes is not on my list of priorities. If they don’t like the fact that I can’t fit them in until the following week then find someone else. Guaranteed though, they wont find anyone more conscientious, caring and reasonably priced π

might surprise you that the brand with the best reputation and the most costly machines offer (in my area at least) a 10-14 day wait for service and most of their customers put up with it, the ones that dont call me.

I do 7-9 Jobs a day, 6 days a week and I can usually get to a job with 1-2 days. I still get customers that canβt wait though. Really annoys me for things like dishwashers and dryers, but thats customers!!!

generally 4/5 jobs a day with approx 2 days response time. Sometimes same day if I happen to have easy work load. Trying to fit in around school runs and holidays. Sometimes I take my 8 years old son with me on jobs that I know it will be an easy job. My customers seems to like my son and I get left alone to get on with the work. My son often ends up getting extra sweets or even money more than I get in tips!

Like most engineers on here you try to get out to a customer as soon as you can if they have to wait a few days until I can call tough is my opinion as I used to chase up work all the time you get nowhere and can be very stress full. My average callout is 2-3 days depending how busy I am I average between 7-13 calls a day but most of them are local so it’s no problem very rarely do over 50 miles covering the work

We all used to work like lunatics. I paid a price at 53 when I had severe arrhythmia and ended up with a pacemaker at 53. Before that I was never ill and thought I could take on the world, in the company 23 years without a day off sick. I am now 57, work on my own four mornings a week and do 3~ 4 calls each morning. Another appliance engineer, an ex workmate and friend, same age as me, had a heart attack last year but luckily they got him sorted.
I love this job but no more mad rushing about for me, you are a long time sleeping.November 7, 2016 at 11:23 am #438412technics1200
