I noticed that the older machines tended to use more water on a fill than the newer machines, when did washing machines start using less ?

More or less when the EU Energy Labels were introduced and made mandatory in around 1992 I think.
From there as the energy use became more and more important in the eyes of buyers, water consumption has been reduced to achieve the ever lower energy consumption. The actual real world savings are not great at all though.

What machine uses the most water out of the ones in the last 15 years or so?
Im looking at getting a used washing machine,many of the new machines use hardly any water
Is there a machine out there that does use a bit more than others when it fills ?

Well the question is old but for what it is worth I`d go for a Hotpoint WM series machine and not a 95 series that preceeded it. Why? Because they used a SENSIBLE amount of the old H20 but they above all sold thousands of the things so there are loads of very competitively priced spares still left both genuine and pattern ( drums gone obsolete though I noticed )…………I`ve had mine for 16 years and it`s still on it`s original bearings and they`re straight forward machines to repair and run- but I`d change the door interlock for a brand new one as they short out and blow the timer tracks, you can get a new door lock for 7 quid. Top tip is to use the 50 degree synthetics cycle more if you can rather than 40 one all the time as the hotter wash is better for the machine when used with non bio powder. These machines were not perfect- the original motor`s brushes were not long lasting so I changed my motor to a fhp type which are much better-but then there will never be one of any make ( and that includes Miele ) whether it`s the crushingly expensive price of parts, no future parts, or whatever. New eco washers tend to be somewhat lacking, quite a few short lived elements due to cold fill only and low H2O levels was always going to be asking for trouble!

The thing is 1totalshambles that the world moves forward. Technology changes and the science of washing garments just gets better. Likewise the ways we can reduce energy usage is incorporated within that same technology. And, you may not realise, but the failure rate of these modern appliances has also increased. So perhaps you might like to enter into the 21st century thinking. Your past has long passed by, the world moves on.
By the way, your ‘style’ of posting makes me suspect you may have posted before under another alias, just a suspicion on my part that is 😉

Hang your technology me old friend! The World moves closer to it`s own foretold conclusion; it isn`t pretty as I suspect we`re just about to find out the hard way. “So perhaps you might like to enter into the 21st century thinking” Why, what can you tell me that is so positive about 21st Century thinking, now 17th Century, now that was a Century for real thinking.

Back to the op, ask any customer that ever owned a hotpoint top loader 96 or 15 series if they think technology is better now and I’m pretty sure what the answer would be
Having said that wouldn’t want to use one now on a water meter
