What’s happened to the 50 degree washes?

I’ve been asked a few times now why most modern washing machines don’t have the 50 degree washes any more. I’ve always said it’s because modern detergents don’t need the higher temps any more, but you know how it is, after the 3rd time you start to wonder if you are giving the right information or not.

Modern fabrics don’t need 50 degrees then? I still don’t know what’s changed exactly. A lot of people always used 50 degrees – and for delicates!

Please Come back HLCC Home Laundry consultive Commitee , the Manufacturers of Washing machines met with Garment manufactures to set up wash standards, remember the wool mark etc, now they were the days when we had 9 wash programs and we as engineers knew what a mahine should be doing on each setting prewash, hot fill, cold fill, mixed fill , length of wash, normal & delicate wash action.
Remember customer with old servis washers buying new SUK ones, getting in-guarantee calls to expain that program 5 was now a rinse & spin and that was why their clothes we still dirty. :lesson:

I think that the thought was that the 50 wash became irrelevant with today’s low temperature stuff, not the detergent manufacturers would entirely agree. Also most things that can be washed at 50 can be washed at 60 or 40 so it simplified things, which I can see the sense of as it’s confusing enough as it is.
