When they put an advert in Yellow Pages 🙁
They become AAAAAAHoover Candy 😯
In fact most firms pull that trick, (aaaaaaD&G) (AAAAGo Direct = Indesit) (AAAAAAService Force). Just scan through any copy of YP and they all use the AAAAAA prefix to ensure their placement gets favoured by the YP typesetters. For years YP have accepted the 000000111111 prefix provided firms ‘proved’ to the YP salesperson that they included that prefix in their Letterheads, invoices etc.
YP banned that scheme last year but for some unfathomable reason allowed the AAAAAA to continue 😕
I gave the YP bloke that came to see me yesterday a right earfull over the issue. They always start by saying “How well is your advert doing for you?” ….and all that sales pitch ballcocks….so I told him 👿
“Well then, it appears that my advert has helped with the payments on your Merc C230 parked outside, so it has had some effect I suppose?”
So if your company is called Aardvark Appliances, unless you ask them to stick those 6 A’s in front on your block advert chances are you’ll be listed at the back? :rolls:

Excuse my ignorance, but why the hell do they (YP) let it happen in the first place?
Also, surely it doesn’t look professional for the personal actually making the advert, so why do they (company) do it?

Because they want your cash and if that’s what they have to do to get it… 😉

😯 Cheers for that info. Martin , for some reason I’ve never even noticed that before and I do rely heavily on Yellow Pages advertising.
Total scam IMO and goes against any kind of fair play. I’d think yellow pages would have to consider altering this if they received enough complaints .Mind you in the case of Hoover and Hotpoint , I doubt we’re loosing much private chargeable work to them.

I would never use yellow pages again, i never got much work out of it…they cunningly divide the relevant area into separate sections like ‘cooker repairers’, ‘electrical appliance repairers’, ‘washing machine repairers’ in the hope that you’ll place more than one ad so it can be extremely expensive.
I used to have a small box ad in there, got the usual sales guff from a visiting rep who said i should sign for two editions to get a cheaper rate, then when the 1st came out to cancel the second year if i wasn’t happy with the ad. Of course i later found out that it was difficult to cancel the second year, the rate was no cheaper anyway but the rep made a tidy commission on the deal 👿
The other inducement was to pay for the ad by DD spread over 10 months interest free to which i agreed. I completed the forms with the rep and the ad duly appeared but no payments were taken from my bank 😀
Some 6 months later I had a letter demanding the whole payment in one go as nothing had yet been paid. 😕
After several calls and letters they agreed to set up another DD to pay for it but again no payment was taken from my bank!
Almost a year to the day I received their next communication….a court summons for the whole amount, plus interest, plus legal fees 👿
Of course i returned the summons to the court with a copy of a letter from my bank showing that they had in fact set up the DD both times but had failed to request any payment, and a counter claim for 300 squid for all the paperwork, phone calls and sheer anguish etc
The last communication was simply an envelope containing a cheque for £300….no letter, nothing.I for one will not be rushing do business with them anytime soon 😉

Yes Clive , yellow pages advertising has been discussed often in the past and opinions vary from “wouldn’t touch them with a barge pole” to “best money I’ve ever spent”.
I think we agreed it’s a regional thing and of course there’s the lucky few who don’t need to advertise at all :rolls:.

One year I was foolish enough to let theYP rep talk me into taking out a large ad which cost me £600 pounds for the year. I got very few calls as a result, most of which were from outside my area. The next year I cancelled. From then on, they gave me a one line add free.
Recently they have been pestering me to advertise with them again. I finally got fed up with this. The end of the coversation went something lie this.
Me.”look, pal, I have done my own survey, and I am going to spend my advertising money where it does most good, and that aint Yellow Pages.”
YP “Isn`t.”
Me ” Pardon?”
YP “Isn`t Yellow Pages.”
Me ” Oh so you`ve finally grasped it then. Next time I need English lessons, I`ll call you. ” Iwasw less than impressed.June 23, 2007 at 11:34 pm #218038senseib

Very wary of the yp when they started asking questions like ” how many people work at the firm” What’s that got to do with placing an advert?

When you have been round the block more than a few times 😥 , it can happen, not advertised for over 20 years now. 8)
