ParticipantI’ve a a couple of repair calls recently to dishwashers that haven’t been washing properly and on close inspection have found the water softener salt container has been filled with detergent and not salt! 😯
I went to a call last Friday to find the container brim full with the stuff, which proved difficult to clear to say the least! It turned out that my customer had done her weekly supermarket shop and inadvertently picked up a packet of Finish Dishwasher POWDER by mistake. Slit the top corner of the packet and poured best part of it in, screwed the cap on tightly then started the machine. 🙁
On a visit to my local Sainsburys store I can see what lead to the mistake being made. The bottom shelf is stacked with salt and the tablets on the shelf above. But the Finish loose detergent packets are neatly laid alongside the salt and the packaging almost identical and easily mistaken for salt. 😥

Do take care when buying salt and double check that it actually says salt on the packet won’t you? 😀

Salt is Salt, Except in the case of Dishwasher salt, When I was training we had extensive training on such matters of how and why you require a ION Exchanger/monobloc in the first place. Nowdays customers and some engineers seem to be under the impression that 4 and 5 in one tablets with salt are sufficient for a dishwasher which of course they are not. Table salt Cannot be used as its unsuitable for the process.
This is the generally accepted idea of what type of salt is required and why.
Dishwasher salt is a particular grade of crystalline sodium chloride intended for use in dishwashers. Dishwasher salt is used for the same purpose as (and is very similar to) water softener salt, namely to regenerate ion exchange resins used to remove the hardness ions calcium and magnesium from water. Dishwasher salt is in a granular form, with particles larger than common table salt and unlike table salt has no added iodine (included as a dietary supplement). The granule size ensures that the salt dissolves slowly and that fine particles do not block the softener unit.
Most customers are far more likely to use the correct salt after I explain why they should be using it in the first place and a little education goes a long way to show that not only do you have the necessary knowledge but that you are helpful and professional which makes them happy to pay you !

I know this may sound daft. I have been told that in Scotland because the water is softer, the dishwasher does not require salt. Can anyone confirm if this is true? I so wish I had found this forum before now!
