ParticipantHi there,
I am hoping that someone can help with an unusual request for help. I need a new washing machine plumbing into my kitchen – fine!
However, my kitchen is in my basement, down some rather steep stone steps. I am not sure that I can ask a plumber to take the machine down the stairs. It will need at least 2 men and perhaps a rope!
I was wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation? I am just not even sure where to start looking for help getting it down the stairs. My new machine is my parents only one (but still only 2 years old) so I didn’t want to fork out for a new one when I didn’t need to!Hope you can help!

In this area, particularly the Saddleworth area there are lots of old properties with basement or even cellar kitchens or laundry rooms.
I have hundreds of machines in exactly the situation you describe.
As for your question ‘ Where to go’ a definitive answer is difficult.
As you are not buying the machine from anyone then you cannot ask the supplier unless your Dad is physically up to it.
Does the kitchen already have plumbing that is suitable for an automatic washing machine, if it does then you don’t need a plumber.
In most cases like this it is usually a matter of asking relations/friends/neighbours to provide the muscle.
I have one customer in Rochdale who has a tiny cellar with an awful, twisting set of stone steps. He has a full size fridge, tumble dryer, dishwasher and a massive American style Whirlpool top loading washing machine down there.
I have no idea how they got the washer into what is basically a dungeon or coal cellar but they did.
Taking your problem in reverse, I delivered a washing machine to my daughters flat in central Manchester a few weeks ago, no lifts, up four flights of stairs, me and her boyfriend carried it up, I made sure I got the end with the most grip, thats to say the base of the machine. 😆
Surely you know at least two fit and healthy blokes who can lug it down the steps for you. 😉
PS. moved your post from Dishwasher to Washing machine forum. 🙂

A small donation to your local Scout troop will often produce a few trustworthy labourers……..

With some makes e.g. Hotpoint and Whirlpool it is quite easy to remove the top concrete block from the outer drum, making the machine a good bit lighter to move.

Your local tool hire shop should have a moving trolley with wheels designed to go up and down flights of stairs. But you still need a bit of muscle power to keep everything under control. 😀

Given the litigious nature of today’s society and the apparent fixation with protecting children from anything and everything I am not sure you will get very far asking the Scouts to move this machine. You would probably end up on some register or other as an exploiter of child labour!!
As Jumpty said, hire yourself a stair-climbing trolley for about £15, then you will only need to worry about controlling the direction and not about supporting its weight.
For example, HSS hire shops have this available:
